Guest Request: 2012

665 posts in this topic

My friend Phantomhoodie has asked me to put in a couple of guest requests for her since she doesn't have an account:

Vic Mignogna (Of course)

Justin Cook (She cosplays both Haru from Fruits Basket and Dietrich from Trinity Blood and she wants to meet the guy who does their voice)

I'll add more if she ever replies to my message. ^^

Pinku Project, Dj Saolilith, Tom Wayland, Lisa Ortiz, and Johnny Young Bosch!!!! I really want to see these guests at Otakon 2012 because they are my idols, inspirations, and my heros. A group that I recently heard about is Pinku Project. They are from Canada and they are an amazing dance group. Since I heard about them they have been my Idols. It would be a dream come true if they came to Otakon 2012.They were at G-Anime 2012 and will be at Anime North as well. Since they can get into those cons I am positively sure that Otakon can get them. It will make me the happiest Otaku ever if Pinku Project came to Otakon 2012!!!!!!!

Yet another long shot, but what about Nintendo's "Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddess" Tour? They basically perform music from many of the "Zelda" games. Plus, they've added a list on more stops on their tour:

  • June 6; Los Angeles, CA; Greek Theatre (during E3 Expo 2012)

  • July 7; Houston, TX; Jesse H. Jones Hall for the Performing Arts

  • July 12; San Diego, CA; Embarcadero Marina Park South (during Comic Con 2012)

  • July 25; Philadelphia, PA; Mann Center

  • July 26; Vienna, VA; Filene Center at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts

  • September 22; Minneapolis, MN; Orpheum Theatre

And Otakon offically starts on July 27, which will be the day after their performance in Vienna, right? So maybe they can follow the example of Puffy AmiYumi, and the "Final Fantasy" composer guy and make a special appearance to the con. Even if only for a moment. Just a thought. (Click here to learn more about them.)

And since we're adding DJs into the requests, How about DJ Hello Kitty (from the official Club KT store in Shibuya 109)? Not sure if this would count, but I know that they have somebody dressed as Hello KItty performing as a DJ. And there are offical DJ Hello Kitty CDs featuring either JPOP songs or remixes of North American songs. Here's a

showing an example of her peformance.

Brina Palencia! She's one of the bigger voice actresses that's never been to an otakon before. Also, bringing back Chris Rager is a must. He makes every convention better, like how he crashed practically every panel at Nekocon last year...

Brina Palencia! She's one of the bigger voice actresses that's never been to an otakon before.

Actually Brina Palencia has been to Otakon in the past, at least twice (that I know of), in 2007: http://www.otakon.co...icle.asp?id=321 and in 2010 as a Funimation Industry Panel member: http://www.liheliso....industry-panel/

Okay, I know Otakon doesn't do a whole love of repeat requests, but I would love to see Johnny Yong Bosch and Stephenie Sheh again. As for others, I would have to say, Tara Strong, Richard Epcar, Steven Jay Blum, Todd Haberkorn, Britney Karbowski, Laura Bailey, Troy Baker, and Karen Strassman.

Internet star wise I'd like to see the Nolstalgia Critic at Otakon.

And that's pretty much it. I'm hoping some of people I requested decide to come to Otakon.

I know that this that this person really doesnt have much to do with the anime and Japanese culture but I think the Nostalgia Critic would be awesome to have as a guest. He has been to other anime cons before and has stated that he does like anime so i hope he can fall under this category

I know it's hard to get manga creators, especially ones currently working, but I'd be thrilled if it were ever possible for Otakon to bring Hirohiko Araki, the creator of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure would be incredible in my mind.

As far as some music guest, Kenji Ohtsuki would be an interesting attraction to bring, and I'd love for a con to bring rock group Kishidan.

Please bring back J. Michael Tatum. He's so entertaining and amusing. I adore all of his panels. His story telling is absolutely hilarious. Him and Vic Mignogna are my favorites.

I'd love if Vic Mignogna could come back for 2012 as well. I adore the both of them.

While I doubt it'd be possible, since all her Notes panels in current manga mention how busy she is, would it ever be possible to ask Watase Yuu to come to Otakon one year? Her stories really inspired me when I was a young teenager and were a light in dark times when my parents were getting divorced and some similarly depressing life problems got me down. I want to someday be able to personally thank her for creating the heartwarming characters that helped me, and Otakon is the biggest con I'm able to attend every year. I know she has been to the US at least once for a convention to promote Fushigi Yuugi, but that was way back in the 90's before I found her series.

Hello! I did read the thread, and I believe by now the Otakon staff is closing deals rather than choosing guests, but if I could post this, perhaps for the next year? I plan to go to Otakon every year anyway. <3 (Also, sorry for being a Tales of fangirl and listing all their best seiyuu...)

Seiyuu:

- Seki Tomokazu

- Ishida Akira

- Koyasu Takehito

- Onosaka Masaya

- Yonaga Tsubasa

- Sawashiro Miyuki (she speaks English fluently~)

- Ueda Yuji

- Konishi Katsuyuki

- Midorikawa Hikaru

- Mizuki Nana (Also jpop singer~ I do realize she's immensely popular, but Otakon pulled off L'Arc~en~Ciel in the past, so I won't hold back! XD)

English voice actor:

- Troy Baker

Performers:

- Porno Graffitti!!

- DJ Ozma / Show Ayanocozey (Kishidan) / Naomi Camellia Yazima (Yazima Beauty Salon) (he got a new single out as DJ Ozma in December 2011, perhaps he'd have an album to promote by July 2012 or 2013?)

- Uverworld

- HIMEKA

- The Pillows (saw them in their American tour and they were AMAZING. I know Otakon prefers "premieres", but it'd be a huge hit, garanteed)

I would like to see more academics on Japan. Kelts was nice, but his December article in the Guardian was in poor taste. It would be amazing to see:

Matt Thorn (currently translating Wandering Son for Fantagraphic Comics)

Akiko Mizoguchi (Ph.D from University of Rochester for a dissertation on yaoi fan culture in Japan)

Sharon Kinsella (lecturer in Manchester on Japanese popular culture including anime and otaku)

Isolde Standish (Professor of Film Studies at SOAS London - wrote on Postmodernism and Akira)

Susan J Napier (Most recognized scholar on anime in America - From Akira to Howl's Moving Castle and From Impressionism to Anime)

James Welker (academic who has written on manga and yaoi extensively)

In terms of Japanese media industry:

Takashi Miike (major international director including the recent Phoenix Ace Attorney and the 3-D remake of Harakiri: Death of a Samurai)

Sion Sono (amazing director seeing greater international acclaim starting with 2003's Suicide Club and now 2012's Himizu)

Yuki Kajiura (Seen her several times already no expectations necessary)

Shiina Ringo (Japanese musician who inspired many anime and manga characters including Nana)

Melt-Banana (Great Japanese noise rock group)

Boredoms (Another amazing noise rock group)

Mamoru Hosoda (Director of Summer Wars and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time)

Yoshida Brothers (tsugaru shamisen artists)

Can we get more translators of manga? It would be great to hear from them on translating Japanese to English.

Curious as to what you thought was in poor taste about Roland's article on "sexless love" -- it is a phenomenon that has received a bit of media attention of late, and I don't think he went into too much detail. Is it just the topic you feel in poor taste?

(Also remember that writers generally don't get to choose their headlines, and I know for a fact he's been edited, including for one of my quotes.)

I'd like to put in a request for Junko Takeuchi. I know it's a bit of a long shot, especially since she must be busy playing the lead role in no less than 3 currently-ongoing anime series, but I figure it couldn't hurt to ask.

My partner and I did a post of the top 5 guests we would like to see at Otakon and I figured I would post an edited version here as well:

Tatsuya Nagamine: While Tatsuya Nagamine does not have the most extensive resume I thought his work on HeartCatch PreCure! was an innovative and standout addition to the PreCure franchise. I would love to see how the project came together and what it was like to work on such a unique magical girl show.

Ai Yazawa: I adore Yazawa’s style and stories. Her beautiful art combined with fashion and music in NANA is unforgetable. Yazawa has taken a sabbatical due to illness from her manga. I’d like to think the NANA manga will continue soon and this would kick it off.

Miki Yoshikawa: I know it is almost impossible to get manga-ka but I would love to be able to talk to Miki Yoshikawa. She has an amazing comedic timing and the ability to write for a shonen audience while retaining a wonderful shojo sensibility. I would also love for Yankee-kun to Megane-chan to get more exposure in the U.S. It might be impossible to get her due to her recently starting a new manga title but it never hurts to ask.

Shinichiro Watanabe: A director who will be forever remembered for Cowboy Bebop, and to a lesser extent Samurai Champloo but one who also debuts a new series this year. Sakamichi no Apollon premiering this spring looks quite promising and reunites Watanabe with Yoko Kanno. He can come to talk about his past successes and show off this new work.

Kenjiro Hata: I just love Kenjiro Hata. With the first Hayate movie just coming on Blu-ray in Japan, a third season of the Hayate anime on its way, and some secret project in the works I would love to pick his brain. I think he would make a wonderful guest if for nothing else he seems to be a straight shooter about the realities of being a manga-ka in this own work. That alone might make him a great guest.

Yuki Kajiura w/ Kalafina: I’m always interested in musical guests who have their hands in a lot of anime and not just one opening. Kajiura along with the group she formed Kalafina would be a great eclectic ensemble to have come. Kajiura worked on the currently popular Madoka Magica and Kalafina performed the ending song for the series as well.

Kunihiko Ikuhara: I tried to choose creators who had not been to the U.S. in the past but I made an exception with Ikuhara. While Ikuhara has made several U.S. anime convention appearances his recent return to directing makes him a wonderful choice for a return visit to talk about Mawaru-Penguindrum. Theoretically he would also be coming because someone picked up the Penguindrum license. But there is so much in that show I would love to be able to ask him about the intricate layers its story and characters.

Yoshiyuki Sadamoto: Founding member of Gainax and long-time character design, Sadamoto has worked on everything from Evangelion to Summer Wars, and is the manga-ka for the recently concluded Evagelion manga. He may have some free time! He also did the character designs for Mamoru Hosod’a newest film.

Kinoko Nasu and Takashi Takeuchi: We have to beat Sakura-Con. They got Gen Urobuchi for 2012. The only way to defeat them in the East Coast/West Coast convention arms race is to get the ultimate Type-Moon related guests. It is totally for the pride and honor of everyone on this side of the country and no other reason I suggest this. Can we let them win? I don’t think so. Also with Fate/Zero streaming in the U.S., Carnival Phantasm looking to be picked up, Mahōtsukai no Yoru theoretically being released, Red Dragon looking to become a multimedia franchise it would a good time for them to make a first U.S. appearance.

Mamoru Hosoda: Hosoda’s films are getting more and more attention. Titles like A Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Summer Wars will not soon be forgotten and he even has things like Digimon and One Piece under his belt. With a new film coming out in Japan this summer, it is a perfect time for Hosoda to visit Otakon and like last year’s guest Makoto Shinkai, he can show his new work as well!
