You probably know them best for the awesomely energetic underscore to Nintendo's Wii commercials (the ones where the two Japanese guys show up at random homes saying "We would like to play!"), but these guys are the real deal -- masters of the shamisen, internationally acclaimed best-selling artists, informal cultural representatives -- and they're coming to Otakon 2010.

We're pleased to welcome The Yoshida Brothers!

Follow the links to their sites to hear some of their awesomeness!

(now if only I could get the nav link to register properly....)

I guessed wrong on this one. Sounds interesting and something that will be easier on the ears than last year's Friday Night Musical Guest. For the record, my guess was Abingdon Boys School. I was right on all, but the last one.

In all seriousness -- google video search for them and watch them perform. It's gonna be a *fantastic* show.

I really thought I wasted my guess because Yoshida Brothers aren't everybody's cup of tea... my friend laughed at me when she looked them up because she was expecting some sort of j-pop/rock band. They are one of the few groups in my relatively sparse collection of music.
I just wish I could listen to them in my car, but my radio transmitter cuts out on a bunch of their quieter songs.

lol I, too, submitted abingdon boys school as my guess (wonder just how many of us did). But I had a few different thoughts in mind and Yoshida Brothers was actually one I considered. I just couldn't figure out the video game link.

Should be pretty cool to see them in person. I remember their "Nikata (Renaissance)" video being on that Bento Beat Box show onDemand a while back. Definately something we've not seen at Otakon before. Thanks, Jim! :D

This goes far beyond the traditional pop/rock sensation fangirlfest found at most cons. I'm pretty excited for this.

To be honest I've never heard of them (probably why I would never have guessed them), but I always look forward to hearing new music so this will be interesting.

I youtubed them last night after the announcement. I am extremely excited by the announcement. I may have to ask for Friday of Otakon off or leave early to make the concert. They sound and look like they will do a great show.

LOL...

I picked Yellow Magic Orchestra in the hopes of some weird reunion/electro/synthpop festival type atmosphere at Otakon, but then again, I also realise that nobody under the age of thirty would have even cared for that at all. :-)

Plus, consider the budget! :-P

I can't believe I guessed correctly! I was listening to internet radio and Yoshida Brothers came on while I was considering the clues and it just popped into my head. I'm usually so bad at these contests because the clues are always so misleading. I hope they do "Storm", I love that song.

All seriousness aside, I wonder how many of us from the northern states see those shamisen picks and immediately think 'ice scraper'. :D

I can't wait!!!! I like their song "Koda (Inside the sun remix)" or to us nintendo fans... "Wii Would Like To Play".
Otakon is the superbowl of anime conventions, the wrestlemania of anime cons and it's a feeling that i can't explain you have to be there to experience it.

I really do appreciate the fact that Otakon tries to diversify their musical guests every year. There is a guy I'm into right now and he's mostly interested in the more traditional aspects of Japanese culture. While the Yoshida Brothers are more of a fusion of classic and modern, the concert might make for a nice psuedo "date" at the con.
