With less than 2 weeks to otakon (wow, time certainly flew by), I was wondering when we should expect to take a glimpse of the otakon schedule and pick our hours. This is my second year of being a gofer, and first time doing 20 hours, so I am not sure what to expect. Are we going by last year timing like 2 days before?

Just curious :)

I was wondering about something similar. I've never been a gofer before, so I'm unfamiliar with the whole process. Are schedules chosen/assigned before or after the orientation? Will we get to update the availability we listed on the gofer pre-reg form once the con schedule is released? I'm assuming that the answers to these questions are "before" and "yes", but I want to check to make sure, since I couldn't find that information posted anywhere (though that could be human error).

Normally the "signing up of" gofer-scheduling is done around the time the program schedule comes out OR during orientation....it's not done before the schedule is released.

Your finalized gofer schedule can be ready as early as orientation or as late as Friday afternoon (a number of factors may affect this such as: when the actual "signing-up" will occur, or how busy Gofer Ops is/will be, or which orientation you are attending).

11AM on Thursday if you are pre-reg for Otakon, gofering, and scheduled to work Thursday evening. Otherwise there is one on Thursday at 7pm, and one on Friday at 9am. The site (http://otakon.com/vo...orientation.asp) suggests being there an hour early. I guess when the schedule comes out we'll figure out which one to go to.

There are plenty of things to do in Baltimore during the day, plus there's the Matsuri this year, so I am just planning to go to the first one and if I happen to need to go to a later one at least I know I'll already be in the city.

Are there spots available for Gofers who would like to work Thursday morning? I said I was available on that day on the reply email once I received confirmation but haven't heard anything back as of yet.
Thanks.

Yes they can mate, I did so last year with a few others behind the registration booths restocking boxes of lanyards, badges, registration bags, and attempting to get those bloody straps attached to the lanyards for the Thursday pre-reg line. It was a good way to get acclimated and get a few hours in early. Those blasted lanyards haunt me though, so difficult to clip. Being a line controller and pointer though, epic job! Felt like playing a real world version of Air Traffic Controller.

Just to confirm though, does that mean there is an orientation for 4:30? I am not sure if there is a reason why you didnt mention the orientation for 4:30 slot. And is the 4:30 one only for people who wants to help out in pre-reg or is that for Thursday night shifts in general? I'd love to help out the press team again this year :P

Thanks again for letting us know. Soo excited :)

Ah...so the two orientation times are at 11am and 7pm on Thursday, correct? (They start showing us in an hour earlier)

You go to the 11am one if you want to work at registration that evening or at the Matsuri (but only 2 gofers will be allowed to work at the Matsuri)....

The 7pm is for gofers not planning to work on Thursday. (Generally speaking?....cuz I don't think pre-reg is normally open that late into Thursday?)

Is the minimum of 2 hr time slots still relevant? I checked the FAQ and that part seems to have been removed, just double checking.

We would prefer it.

Also, regarding the orientations being at 11 am and 7 p.m on Thursday - if you show up at those times, you will not get in. We won't be at the door to let you in. That's why we asked people to arrive at 10 and 6 - keep in mind that you also have to fill out some paperwork. As of 11 and 7 we will be up in the Otakafe, and nobody will be letting any gofers in.

Woah, really? I seriously wish this had been mentioned somewhere before. The thing that made me decide to gofer this year after all was knowing I could potentially knock out some hours on Thursday. I figured there was always a chance the slots would fill up before I could request to work Pre Reg, but I didn't know there was a zero chance of working Thursday. This is making me completely rethink my weekend. Dx

I'm interested in pretty much anything and everything, but this is my first year so I have no idea what kind of things are even available. So even though I'm new to volunteering, there might still be things for me to do on Thursday? If so, that's a huge relief. I saw what you said about not working prereg and I was like "Oh my gosh, but what else IS there on Thursday? D:" Silly me!

There are plenty of stuff to do on Thursday. I was first time gofer last year and I ended up helping out the Press Relations by giving out brochures, badges and gifts to the incoming press/relations.

Is there anyway at all to extend the 11:00 deadline by even half an hour? There have been no buses or any kind of public transportation arriving at Baltimore before 10:30, and, assuming it arrives on time, getting a taxi, dropping off bags, and everything else may take a bit. Unless there's a place where we can drop our bags at while doing Orientation?

From my experience, if you're staying at a hotel they let you drop of your bags (and they can hold it for you) before their official check-in.

Last year they actually even were nice enough to check us into the room 3-4 hours before their 'check-in time'

I've also seen some people bring their bags to orientation before....granted they only had a few bags so it wasn't really obvious/in-the-way that much..as far as I recall........

Where are you traveling from? The lightrail, marc, metro opens pretty early for weekdays.

Ah, I'm not in the area, I'm coming in from Philly so I'm taking Greyhound. I also checked Megabus and Bolt, but they're all later in the day as well.

Have you tried the Chinatown buses? I know some buses start at 7 or 8 from Philly and it usually stop by Baltimore plaza before heading to DC. I believe it's 15 each way. Again, there might be traffic coming into Baltimore, so you might need to add that factor in when picking the bus schedule.

Hmm I'll have to look into that then. I purchased Greyhound tickets for $2, and that leaves at 8:30. 7 would be ideal, so I'll have to check the chinatown bus if possible.

Do what you can, Danny. The issue is that the BCC is big, and we won't have anybody at the door to let you in after 11 a.m. That's why we've been so specific about the time. We do have a second orientation later, which will give you some time to check in and take care of things before you show up.

The Chinatown bus stop in Baltimore is a bit dicey. It's actually over across the Baltimore Travel Plaza (which formerly was a Greyhound bus stop). The street address is 5625 O'Donnell St (or thereabouts) and while there are some MTA local service buses (Routes 10 and 20 come to mind) that go from there to the BCC, it's still a bit of ways away off (4.5 miles or so).

The Greyhound Downtown Baltimore Bus Terminal on Haines Street is actually much, MUCH closer to the BCC than the Travel Plaza at only 1.5 miles or so north...

Another option is Amtrak, a bit pricey $60-$80/per way but it get you to downtown too (1.6mi): http://tickets.amtrak.com/itd/amtrak

Hey, if it comes down to it, I can swing by where ever you end up and drive you the rest of the way to the BCC. (I live in the area, just send me a pm if you are interested so we can nail down details).

I think we may have to risk it. I'm actually not sure what's going on now, cause I'm flying back from post San Diego Comic Con, and our flight to NY has been delayed, so now I'm missing my bus back to Philly... @___@ Thank's for all the help though! I'll figure it out. Hope to see you there!
