  1. 4 hotels rooms for 3 nights: 1650$US

Rental for 2 8 passengers Econoline trucks: 2240$CAN

Gas for Montreal to Baltimore and back: 900$CAN

Road trip with 15 friends to Otakon: Priceless!

But... thats not too bad assuming you have 16 people? 300$ a person or so?

  2. Not sure if its con-related, or a fear of going to the dentist later in July, but has anyone else ever dreamed of your teeth falling out? :o

I did have a dream that my seat on my flight got double booked and I got moved to First class because they flight was full. :D Then when I got to my seat the person sitting next to me was Kitagawa Keiko. :D We talked about stuff and I found out she was going to Otakon! haha... Then I woke up. :D

Fear of flight problems + Otakon ftw :D

  3. No more missing the bus dreams for me, but last night I dreamed I was being chased by a bunch or Godzilla cosplayers. -.- The setting looked like the shopping district in Kobe that I go to though... lol

Creepy dream. Maybe I am thinking about a few years back someone cosplayed as Godzilla and made a really awesome costume. I remember him dancing near the DJ tables that were set up near the Dealer's room Entrance.

    Anyway, it was creepy. :D

  4. I have been dreaming about missing a bus. I guess thats my subconscience telling me to reserve my bus ticket to the airport. -.-

Other than that I have been sleeping rather well despite the overwhelming 150% humidity + 38 degree heat. :D

  5. how late can i pick up my badge? On Thursday that is. I still wanna get my badge on Thursday...but I also have tickets to the vamp concert @.@ super confused...it's my first time going to otakon so I don't know what to expect.
  6. I am quite intimidated by long times but from reading the posts here I don't think I got anything to worry about :) It seems the line moves surprisingly fast when the number of people are considered.

the pre-reg line is insanely long. you'll probably do an anime-fall over when you see it. however it does move very quickly. Last year I got in line around 6pm and waited 30-45mins..... felt like 15mins because I was entertained by all the cosplays walking by - and by this shirtless guy swinging a glowstick around for no reason :)

  7. -Personal Statistics-

Name (First name or Alias):: Jon or Jonathan

    Age:: 26

    Male or Fe male:: Male

Do you need sleep at a con? Usually eventually, although I have become somewhat of an ensomniac lately. I imagine I will sleep fine after my flight though. -.-

Drink or sm oke:: Drink when the feeling arises or I'm surrounded by tastey drinks. HATE sm oking.

Tell us about yourself:: Uh what to say... I love games. I love biking and running, although this is a recent development. I love Japan; history, culture (Both old and new), language, food, and most of the lifestyle. I graduated from college, and a year later moved to Japan. Living half way around the world from all of your friends is a challenge, throw in the lack of language ability at first and it was... painful. Wouldn't pass it up for anything else though.

    -Convention Statistics-

Do you go to panels? Yes, usually a few.

Do you attend the dances/raves? Not usually.

Do you spend any time gaming? Not usually. My console abilities are lacking I fear.

Do you participate or go to the masquerade? Never have, but I hear its a lot of fun! ;p

Do you cosplay? I have before, and this year I may wander about Saturday as Kyon from Haruhi. Mainly because its simple. :D

Are you staffing or volunteering at the con? Nope. -.- I don't work on vacation, especially not as a go-for.

  8. Also, if you're checkin' out beers in Baltimore, why not check out our semi-local (if Rehoboth Beach is local) Dogfishhead beers? The Aprihop and 90 Minute IPA varieties are delightful.

I'm risking the wrath of the moderators for veering so far off topic, but I'm older than most of them and don't give a flying dogfish what they think for the most part, so.... :D

If Mr. Blinker is asking about Duvel or Delirium Tremens, he knows what he's asking about, and Dogfish Head beers would be an interesting distraction, but a detour from what he really wants. (Yo, Blinker, how about Delirium Noel, or Delirium Nocturnem? Or Cantillon, or Fantome, or Westmalle, or Chimay, or Affligem, or Corsendonk, or Kwak, or de Koninck, or Dupont, or......)

There are hardcore beer fans who could set up shop in Max's for three days straight just sampling different beers and not run into the same beers they can get at home, if they had enough money. Or he could just go across the street from the BCC to the Pratt Street Ale House (formerly the Wharf Rat)--not as much variety, but good beer.

If Mr. Blinker is actually coming from Japan, I openly invite him (and other interested serious beer geeks) for a pub crawl or beer trip on Thursday night, provided I'm in town that night................

  9. There was quite a line last year, if I remember correctly.

At 7-10pm? Hmm must have changed some then. Maybe three years ago, there was no line towards the end of the night.

Hoping I can get there and get in line to get my pass, while also being able to get pizza and see a movie. ;p

  10. I work until 8 Pm on Thursday night and I want to pick up my registration after I leave work. I will get down to the Convention center around 9 PM. I know registration closes at 10 PM, but What time does the line close for Pre-Registration Pickup. If it closes around 9 PM, I just will have to go to plan B.
  11. Hmm... Lets see, when I can catch them;

    Saki

    Valkyria Chronicles

    Chrome Shelled Regios

クロスゲーム (Cross Game) - Actually really enjoying this one. . . -.-

    Shangri-La

    K-ON

Phantom - Requiem for the Phantom

    Guin Saga

    Tears to Tiara

    Asura Cryin

    Pandora Hearts

    Tayutama

    Some other randoms...

  12. Hmm... As far as I know for my group its

    Me

    My 2 Best Friends

    One of their Fiances

    The same ones little brother

    Another good friend

    his fiance

    and her annoying little brother

    Ugh... annoying little brothers... -.-

I am hoping to meet a lot of people though! :D

  13. Actually, if you try to pull that stuff with failing to show for the second leg of a round trip ticket, the airlines WILL charge you the difference, after the fact. It's listed in the terms and conditions of carriage. If a travel agency is charging you more, it's because they want to make a profit on the itinerary, not because they're out to screw you over.

If you really feel that there's a big conspiracy in Japan against foreigners, then you need to talk to David Aldwinckle

  14. I am aware there are no "official" long holidays in Japan during the summer, and even Obon is not a National Holiday, most people have to take off for it, including teac hers.

If so you probably wouldn't have any problems with the extra charges, but it is pretty wide spread for foreigners. In fact it was in the paper not too long ago.

I wouldn't say that most people "have" to take off for it. This is a country where plenty of people (unfortunately) work on holidays regularly, and plenty are unable to take holidays, especially people who are relatively junior at their companies. It really depends on the industry. Business is slower in the summer, but in general, it runs fairly normally, unlike Golden Week. My company discourages us from all taking vacation at the same time, especially in summer, and I didn't take a summer holiday last year.

My secretary asked my company's travel agent regarding extra charges for foreign nationals, and the travel agent says that he hasn't heard of such a thing. My secretary also noted that ANA's Japan site also doesn't seem to ask what nationality a person is. (My secretary always runs a cross-check for prices on ANA's site before she books my tickets.) I'm wondering if this is limited to specific travel agents.

My tickets cost about 25% more this year than when I purchased last year in April, which is isn't as much of a jump as I feared.

    edit:whoops, server error.

  15. I am aware there are no "official" long holidays in Japan during the summer, and even Obon is not a National Holiday, most people have to take off for it, including teac hers. Unfortunately there are three times where travel is "capable" by the majority of the Japanese public. One is obviously Golden Week, another is New Years, and the last is in the summer months of July and August. Prices for traveling around these times spi kes considerably compared to "off" times. For example I can fly home for Thank sgiving for 800$ round trip and flying home around the 20th of December is about 1000$ cheaper than flying home around the 26-27th.

I have checked nearly all the Travel Agencies, including HIS and JTB. HIS for the same dates that I got for about 1550$ on Orbitz wanted close to 2100$(which just happens to be the one way ticket fair I saw for the same day.) I even tried both calling and emailing some to see if I could get different rates. No success. I even had family check with travel agents in America as well.

Are you Japanese? If so you probably wouldn't have any problems with the extra charges, but it is pretty wide spread for foreigners. In fact it was in the paper not too long ago.

  16. Anyone know someplace that sells bottled, unsweetened teas? -.- In Japan, you have one door in the konbini as cold canned coffe/coke like drinks/low cal drinks. Then the entire door next to that one is filled with various types of tea, all unsweetened but very delicious.

I know I went to most of the konbini's around my home town during Christmas and couldn't find anything similar. I am thinking I will have to bring my own teabags and make tea then chill it some how.... B)

  17. Yaoi... heh such a long discussion could be held about Yaoi.

There's only two types of Yaoi.

One type has a great story and has depth. Basically to the point where you could take out the hom osexual romance and it'd still be a great anime.

Then the other is where the whole plot and draw to the story is from the boy on boy action. Typically made specifically for fangirls.
