Well, Otakon can begin by limiting the number of attendees, for one (people who rolled their pre-reg from the year before should have priority). Much wider aisles in the Dealer's Room. Having chairs spread further apart in the Videos and Panel rooms. Skip the Concerts, Dance, and Cosplay shows this year (Hall cosplays can still go on). Have "Arcade-style" controllers in the Video Game room that can be wiped down with disinfectant after every use.

While all that is good and dandy in theory, it'd be super hard to enforce. I'm ofc not staff, but I just think it'd be irresponsible to run an Ota this year, as much as I want it to happen. I guess we'll see how it all turns out closer to the con.. We're still in March with many months to go.

Anyway, yeah.. AB not happening this year was a bummer... It didn't hit me as hard as it did last year (when I was a literal emotional wreck for no rational reason), but still a c-c-combo breaker. I'd been going since 2009 nonstop, so tradition breaker too...

  2. If Otakon or any con for that matter this year can happen safely, even if at reduced capacity, it'd be a miracle. I'd like to attend at least AnimeNYC in November, when it'll be almost "sure" that we'd have reached "herd immunity" by then (the 70-85% needed for that will happen and will be theoretically achieved by late summer or so I've heard analysts predict). I'm not yet giving up hope, but I'm being cautiously optimistically as I have been since we've finally started to suppress this bastardass virus. Hopefully by the summer we'll have a better idea as Kelly said what'll happen. I really hope TX and MS lifting mask mandates so soon doesn't mess with Otakon happening or not, but we'll have to wait and see.

  3. As much as I'd love to have Otakon this year I think it'd be best to have your expectations low, and just plan for 2022. Dr. Fauci is hoping that by the fall 85% of the population in the US is going to be vaccinated, and only then some sense of normalcy can return, but we'll just have to wait and see. There's a similar debate going on about Anime Boston on FaceBook in group Anime Boston Social (if not elsewhere as well). It's yet to be cancelled, but there would have been pre-reg announcements and hotel block releases/other forms of promotion by now if it was a sure thing to happen in 2021...  I assume it's similar for Otakon as well.

At this point I'm hoping for Nekocon in November 2021 and that's it. I haven't bothered to register for Otakon and I doubt I will just to be disappointed again.

I've been wanting to hit up NekoCon as well since I have a friend in Newport News / Hampton Roads I could possibly stay with...

I have all the shirts, though some are retired due to age and/or condition. (My 2017 shirt for some reason has a bunch of small holes in it, and I know I didn't get acid on it at work.)

I still have the old Otakon shoulder(?) bag. Though mine is unique because the zipper on it is upside down. I also have several of the early pins (One of the earliest ones - the one w/ the bunny girl that reminds me of the Daicon IV opening, is darker than I originally recall. Whether that's 'patina', age, or just how it originally looked I can't recall.), and the 3 postcards they put out when Otakon had a post office in the Dealer's Room.

    Awesome!

  5. I started attending Otakon in 2009, so I never had the chance to collect all the t-shirts from the Ota Merch Booth in the Dealer's Room each year. I decided to check eBay for them (after asking Jim about the possibility of getting them reprinted for sale) and here's what I found:

    https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524.m570.l1313&_nkw=otakon T Shirt&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_osacat=0&_odkw=otakon#item3d9a574fe5

I know some of you here have been attending Otakon waaaaay longer than I have and I wonder if y'all have any of these shirts or other relics of Otakons past? I have a few of my shirts and some of the "con lit" booklets and whatnot, but that's about it.

    What about you guys?

Short answer: some of the earlier ones are complicated by copyright issues, which we discovered when we tried to arrange something cool for our 10th.  At least one of the early ones is probably not reprintable at all, if memory serves because it uses a character we don't have rights to. In other cases it's likely that either we don't have access to quality version of art, or don't have the correct agreement in place for reprint -- it was a few years before we got the hang of that stuff.  But I've seen the odd shirt show up on eBay.

Thank you for that thorough answer, Jim. I appreciate it and I'll look out for the odd shirt up on eBay.

  7. I know I remember seeing all the t-shirt designs from 1994-Now at the Ota Museum the past few years, but are any of them re-create-able for sale? I started going to Ota in 2009, and I'd love to have con merch (like the shirts) from 1994-2009 and beyond that I don't have. Can anyone shed any light on this?

  8. Hey all, so we don't know if Otakon'll run/run safely by next summer, but under the assumption that it does what's everyone's cosplans? For me I'm going to bring my regular Senbonzakura Miku genderbend as well as rework my Kagerou Days/Daze Miku semi-genderbend, but I also might throw together a Miroku the Monk from Inuyasha in case I wanna swap into him for a bit during the con.

    What about you guys?

Lastly, yay for me starting the Otakon 2021 forum with its first post! lol

I'm not sure if the "bigger and better claim" is necessarily accurate, and this goes for a lot of cons that were scuttled this year. Though force majeure saves them from massive payouts to the venue, contractors and such, there are still costs associated with not having an event, to say nothing of the refunds to those who ask for them and the merch they can't sell. And the people who do roll over their memberships at ANYC, Ota and other cons, they're not paying twice to go, by definition. And the big unknowns are how many people will want to go to cons next year, whether the vaccine will be out there and what kind of restrictions may be in place from city to city.

I know all that, but I'm just being hopeful. lol

And Anime NYC was called off today. I mean, you could see that one from a mile off.

Yup. I'm glad they did. That just means they can get bigger and better guests for next year! And maybe use more of the JJCC after the expansion is done.... Like dedicated rooms for the AA and DR, and video game room.

NYC has made this announcement :

Due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) many events are being canceled or rescheduled. Before attending, please check with organizing group to confirm. *Note: Large events requiring a city events permit will be canceled through September 30th as the City works to prioritize open spaces for public use.*

We advise all to take extra precautions to stay healthy and safe. The NYC Health Department recommends that if you are an older adult or have chronic health conditions, you avoid unnecessary gatherings and events.

    ============================================================================================================ SNIPPED QUOTE ===================================================================================================================================================

AnimeNYC is likely waiting on some final confirmations etc before they inevitably cancel as well. I'd feel it to be VERY irresponsible to run the con during this whole thing... Sure NYC is said to be in better shape now but who's to say that people from OUTSIDE NYC from HOTSPOT areas/states won't try and attend should they for some ungodly reason not cancel? That's my concern. I really hope Left Field Media (LFM) is weight all possibilities and scenarios. They seem like a good group of people that'll do things for the better good and not just for their wallets, but I really hope they do the right thing.

    AMEN BROTHER.

I think visibility was my biggest problem with the initial batch of online conventions.  Being 4th of July weekend I had already made plans to catch up with my family on video chat, cooking way too much meat for a single household, and then marathon gaming with my friends online.  By the time I remembered that these cons were going on I tuned into whichever one was running on youtube and saw they were just showing anime episodes so turned it back off.  So if I as an avid con-goer bounced off of the stream then I doubt they did any traffic with the general youtube / twitch / other streaming audience.

I still think the online convention concept can work but I think the marketing and the presentation in a post-COVID world still needs to get figured out.  Repeat attendees and word of mouth growth gets stifled when there are no more events to physically go to this year.

Yeah online conventions I feel work best when it's literally streamed, and the streamer pulls ppl in through Discord calls and other means of participation like that. Just showing anime eps on stream (which I'm 99% sure is illegal unless it's Funimation / Sentai / Discotek etc doing it with their own content) isn't anything special and unique to most... I mean I have a Plex server with MANY MANY anime series and movies that I can just sit at home (or anywhere really) and watch... I don't even really sit in IRL con video rooms much for that reason. I had wanted to do a panel on music rhythm games for OtaOnline 2020 on Aug 1, but I didn't have time to really put it together in time... I might do the same panel IRL at a con in 2021 or beyond, but I'd have to work some things out to make it work properly. But all in all, online con aren't for me as it defies the purpose of a con... which is gathering with fellow otaku in person and nerding out about otaku culture and whatnot... something online cons in my view cannot do.

There were times when I expected a phone number to appear at the bottom of the screen: "Please call and make a pledge of support to provide a contained con space free of foreign viruses (and other type of con-funk), for all the wondering otakus out there".

    Haha yeah!

Having two conventions at the same time in real life is nbd. On the internet, it makes zero sense. And Funimation knows when AX weekend is. Why did they have to counter-program? And you also had issues where I know the AX stream on YouTube got copyright struck. They should've thought that through.

Agreed... I've never like the concept of "online cons". While I understand their appeal/purpose, I just can't get behind it.

  14. Interesting analysis. Yeah I'm with you that it's more of a "telethon" than a traditional con. I didn't watch any of it not because I didn't want to, but because I forgot.. haha. My sleep schedule is so messed up that I was up all night (like I will be again tonight likely since I just woke up.. oof) that I wouldn't have been able to "attend". I really hope it's safe to attend cons in person again ASAP in 2021 (hopefully by the end of January for MaGFest? Please?). This year sucked and we need some redemption. lol.

This is my question: Since backward campatibility for PS4 games seems like a given, what will happen to the games that you've bought digitally? Will Sony create a utility that you can transfer all your digital PS4 games to the PS5?

There's been conflicting info about whether or not it'll play PS4 games from what I've seen.. I guess we'll have to see...
