    EARLY CONCERT REQUEST:
    fhana, Tatsuro Yamashita.

A fan of culture I see... Yamashita Tatsuro is awesome! I love 80s Jpop/JRock, but you and I might be the only ones that know of him... Most of the con-going generation now is below the age of 20... but if he can be gotten, that'd be freakin' great!

  2. Uhhh why is there a duplicate of this thread? There's another one already posted by someone....

    HERE:

Mods I'd suggest you lock this thread so as to not create confusion... or maybe merge the two if you can do that?

EDIT: otoxo already noticed the duplicate thread before I did... lol

  3. As I request every year:

Musical Guest: DO AS IN-FREAKIN-FINITY XDDD. I've been requesting them for as long as I can remember. They FINALLY came to the US for a con back on Labor Day weekend of this year to San Japan in  San Antonio, Texas but I couldn't get out there to see them. PLEASE BRING THEM TO OTAKON 2020! I hope their schedule allows for it!
KOTOKO (never seen her live, but it'd be cool to see her in a concert setting
May'n (I saw her in 2018 at Anime Central, and it was awesome)
Utada Hikaru (I've seen her a few times, but she's an awesome grab, especially for the Kingdom Hearts fanboys/girls out there, as she sings many of the vocal pieces for the games...

    Seiyuu:
Kugimiya Rie (she was just in the US for AnimeNYC, but it'd be cool to see her again)
Tomokazu Sugita and Hirano Aya (she was last at Otakon in 2012 but her and Sugita-san on stage doing lines from Suzumiya Haruhi would be ICONIC and AWESOME and Otaku life completing!!
    Hayashibara Megumi
Mitsuishi Kotono (Sailor Moon/Tsukino Usagi)  || Hisakawa Aya (Sailor Mercury/Mizuno Ami) || Tomizawa Michie (Sailor Mars/Hino Rei) || Shinohara Emi/Emiko (Sailor Jupiter/Kino Makoto) || Fukami Rika (Sailor Venus/Aino Minako) || Han Keiko (Black Cat Luna) || Takato Yasuhiro (White Cat Artemis) <=== in case anyone doesn't know why I grouped those seven requests together it's because they are the ORIGINAL 90s 5 inner Sailor Soldiers/Scouts/Senshi as well as Luna and Artemis' seiyuu and having a MEGA PANEL with at least the Senshi seiyuu would be amazing and I've been wanting this to happen for YEARS.

That's what I got for now... Otakon Guest Relations Dept, GET ON IT! LOL

If you are picturing something like Otakon that straddles between industry and volunteer efforts, well that might be a phenomenon that is unique to Western audiences because the local fan-generated content is used to fill the gaps that are too expensive to fly Japanese guests for every programming track.

...as I reply to this months later...

Yeah I sort of envisioned it like what I quoted there... I just don't think it'd have the same effect as we make it here in the US/Europe/Canada etc.

  5. I was there all weekend for year 3 (my first year) and it was a lot of fun as Danny said. I sadly and admittedly was mostly in the "Video Game Room/Arcade" area of the Dealer's Room most of the weekend, but I did get recognized in my Senbonzakura Mikuo cosplay quite a few times, and that makes me happy.

On Sunday at 11AM I attended the Kugimiya Rie Showcase panel which was awesome, as it was her first time/year EVER in the US at a con (and I think overall her first time outside Japan as well). She live dubbed a scene from Toradora (ep 24 at the end) and it was awesome seeing her in-sync with Taiga in that scene but I was slightly disappointed she didn't say her fan favorite line of "Urusai!!" which means "you're noisy" but mostly translated by fans as "shut up!!". I really hope they bring her back to some sort of con somewhere that I go to (like Anime Boston or Anime Central) and she says "urusai" at some point in character. I've been requesting her for Otakon for many years, and I'm happy someone finally got her to appear at US con.

    The Ugly:

In one of the panels, there was a guy with a really annoying "Jerry Lewis" sounding voice that kept talking over the panelist. He was also the only one waving a glowstick during one of the presentation that had music in it. Someone in the audience even said "Will You Shut The F**k up!" to him at least once.

LMAO Really?!? I would have been laughing my ass off if I saw that guy get OWNED like that..

The only thing that I didn't like (and this not the con's fault, but 100% my own) is that I had to commute from almost the middle of Long Island to NYC each day because I was staying with friends in the town of Amityville, and I took up their offer because I didn't have to factor in the cost of a hotel room, but for 2020 I'm going to do just that, as it'll make things much easier and much more convenient if I wanted to take a break, or drop off accumulated merch from the DR/AA, or what have you.

All in all I did enjoy ANYC 2019 and its 46k attendance glory, and I plan on attending again in 2020. I loved walking the streets of NYC with friends when going to get food and then when I walked it myself going to Penn Station to catch my train. I had missed it... because as some of you may not know I used to live in close proximity to NYC, and I love it a lot.

That's a good question. Comiket serves the doujinshi creators, while AnimeJapan (nee TAF) is a trade show. JumpFesta is run by Shueisha.

Anime conventions as we know them are more of a western concept--not just in the US, but events like Anime Friends and Japan Expo. That's perhaps a byproduct of how anime cons here were outgrowths of comic and sci-fi cons. For Japanese guests, it's something novel and, for musical acts, a feather in their cap.

Yeah... I really can't see legit "Western-style" anime cons popping up in Japan... it seems too meta/too redundant since anime in Japan is basically a regular TV show, and celebrating a TV show seems silly IMO...

  7. Hey guys, so someone I talk to says he might not do Otakon anymore past this year due to him having the opportunity of moving across the country to Washington State, and someone in that group chat we're in on FaceBook said for him to move to Japan to attend anime conventions there to spite us all... Is convention culture as strong in Japan as it is in other countries/continents like North America and Europe? To my knowledge anime is so intertwined into the general pop culture in Japan that having a convention for a general TV show genre for them would be overly exaggerated, don't you guys think? Also to my knowledge the only "convention" like things that happen are Comiket (Comic Market) twice a year, the Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair, as well as C3AFA Tokyo, which are convention-like events, but to me it doesn't seem to represent what we in the Western world depict as a true anime convention... This is all speculation on my part really since I've never been to Japan in general, but what are your guys' thoughts?

  8. Since about a month has gone by now, does anyone think that we'll have our first batch of guests announced before pre-registration opens?  I just think that if we get a guest announcement or 2 prior to opening pre-registration, it would give people plenty of time to decide whether or not they want to attend this year.

Now for me, I'm attending regardless of who Otakon invites this year, but all the same, getting to meet certain people whose work I admire is something very meaningful to me, as is with others.  I go to cons like Otakon for 2 different reasons- Just for and my best friend to hang out with our fellows anime fans, nerds, and geeks.  And the other half is getting to meet the people who voiced the characters I really like, or in some cases, have played the songs I listen to, and have created the media behind the scenes.

Just saying is all.  But this all just a question/suggestion.

Those're actually mostly the reasons why I attend anime conventions (not just Otakon). I work in retail and when I tell my long time customers about my anime etc hobby and that I attend conventions surrounding it and they remember that I go to certain ones during certain times of the year it makes me feel accepted....lack of a better way of describing it.  Back at Otakon 2012 I was able to attend the Hirano Aya concert, and that blew me away. She's so cute in person and seeing her sing the Haruhi songs (as well as her regular Jpop songs) was f-ing amazing! In March I'm going to Japan for "spring break" though it's not a break from school, but still it's a break from work, in the spring... lol and I plan on seeing Jpop group Do As Infinity.

I know I went off topic there somewhat, but I have requested DAI to come to Otakon before...I believe a few years in a row, since about 2011 or 2012? Jim, can you pursue them for 2016 or 2017 should they still be rockin' out then? xD

  9. I know it's been said that a Vocaloid concert is unlikely, but if can happen the 1st Mariner Arena would be an awesome venue for it. It's plenty large, and I think CFM would have plenty of room to set stuff up for such an event. NYC's Hammerstein Ballroom, where the Miku Expo NYC concert was held is a MUCH smaller venue and it worked out great... nearly a full house. I'd think that such an event at Otakon could easily fill the Arena.

    just my $0.02.

  10. As I said above, I saw JAM Project at AB this year, but I wouldn't mind seeing them again. Also re: Hayashibara-sama: I'd like to request/suggest her as a musical guest as well since she is also a great and awesome etc singer. I love her songs. :)

    Oh and I almost forgot: Asakawa Yuu. I saw her at AB this year, but didn't have anything to ask her at he QnA Panel... all ppl were asking her was stuff about Vocaloid 3....the same question one person after another... -_-;;

  11.

I second Hayashibara Megumi-sama as well as all of the original Japanese Sailor Moon cast. I'd die a happy man. xD

There is a not-too-secret short list of guests that, should the option appear, I am authorized to pursue with maximum effort.

I refer to them as "Holy SH**" guests. The list includes (but isn't limited to):

    Hayao Miyazaki

    Rumiko Takahashi

    Megumi Hayashibara

    Leiji Matsumoto

So no worries -- if the opportunity happens, there will be no hesitation about snapping one of them up.

In fact that list is shorter than it used to be... because we've snagged a few over the years. smile.png

Let's see, Shinkai, Watanabe, Kanno, Jam Project?

I've seem JAM Project at Anime Boston this year. They were AWESOME! :)

Thanks Jim! If you can put that effort towards Hayashibara-sama, that'd be über awesome lol. She's awesome and I want to meet her so bad. Takahashi-sama would be a close second. Though I'm sure the others will make my fellow Otaku/Otakon goers happy. ^.^

Also I'd like to add in a musical guest request....

Do...as...infinity! I know someone in Japan that says they're "pretty much done" but if they could go out with a bang at Ota I'd not know what to do with myself. lol

  13. I actually have a group I'll be hanging out with during the con, but I won't necessarily always be with them the entire con weekend. If anyone wants to hang out and get a drink (if you're 21 or over) I'm game.

Name: Gaspar or Shiggitay (as my username suggests lol). Either one is fine.

Age: 27 as of Jan 19th of this year

Cosplaying As: Myself. I've been wanting to go as Miroku (Inuyasha) or Tuxedo Kamen/Mask (Sailor Moon)... Maybe next year...

Interests: Anime and anything related like Vocaloids, computer building, casual gaming, classically trained pianist, though severely, and sadly out of practice

    Hobbies: See above.

Anything extra: I like meeting new people, even though I can sometimes be semi-shy, especially around females I don't know. Don't let that (or my age) stop you from approaching me and saying hello. We'll be at Otakon... we are bound to mesh somehow.

    AIM: Shiggitay

AIM 2 (my phone's SN): ShiggyMozart <== don't ask... I was being random and I wanted to variate away from my "Shigg" nomenclature for my screen names.

    Skype: ShiggityShiggityShwah

Skype (phone): Shiggitay.Epic4G <== Unless I'm within a WiFi hotspot I can't take voice or video calls because Sprint hasn't enabled such data usage on their 3G / 4G networks as of yet. It's either that or it's a limitation of Skype in its current state for Android...

    E-mails: shiggymiyamoto@gmail.com -or- shiggitylive@gmail.com -or- gheller@rokokomedia.com

I do have cell # but I won't post it here for obvious reasons. :-P

I hope to see you guys at Otakon!
