  1. I do hope there is a program book and offline schedule.

    Not everyone has a phone.

Not everyone with a phone has mobile data.

Not every phone is compatible with apps.

If there is no offline schedule or reliable public wifi at the convention center, I won't have any access to any online based schedule.

The assumption that everyone always has access to a working online capable mobile device is problematic at best.

  2. Convention centres are very expensive. Otakon has to book BCC for longer then the Thur-Sun, I think Monday or Tuesday? in order to set up. The moment they stay past the booked time on Sunday night, Otakon has to pay extra usage fees to BCC to keep the building open, the docks working, the power/water on, the BCC staff there etc.

To give you an idea about the sort of prices a convention/exhibition centre is...

Melbourne Exhibition Centre requires an event to hire at least 2 bays (10% of the building). Just those 2 bays cost $40,000AUD per day. And that

  3. I'd have thought the question wouldn't be why do the dealers close so early, but more why are the artists open so late?

All the reasons that get given to the "why do dealers close early?" should apply to the artists as well...

  4. However they also know that most of those 22,000 people are going to sharing rooms and get the Otakon group rates at some nearby hotel. A jump like that sounds a bit too much to be due to Otakon.

Is there some other event in town that weekend as well?

  5. Especially when there are so many people who are willing to pay for the regular rate.

Maybe that's why there was such a big jump this year - if everyone's willing to pay the regular rate, there's no reason why the hotel should offer a discounted rate.

  6. Bear in mind however that if it's with a group then it's based generosity alone, not including the helpfull split in board, just the jesture to open up space you might have planned to keep it just you and your friend(s). I may be the crazy one here, it just burns me up when these type of things are expected.

It's not safe and blah blah blah but when I was in the Air Force I picked up several hitch hikers/homeless/whatever and got them a few hundred mile in the direction they were going before I had to take a different direction, and most of them were gratefull, not that I was expecting praise, it's just the indignence that would get to me. One guy, not 5 minutes after I picked him up on the road, he told me (word for word) "yah when I wanna go see my folks up there I can always count on a free ride from people like you on highways like these"... I kind shook my head and querveshly said "ahh heh yup", but whatever, we all have different looks on things, tomato toma(h)to, etc, etc

The point is I think you've been very fortunate to have the stars allign for you all this time, but I think it makes perfect sense to plan well ahead of time unless you've an ace or 2 up your sleeve... just no need to point out that you feel you're above the people who prepare way ahead of time, not saying you specificly stated you're above them of course, just for arguments sake of making a point... no point pun there btw...

  7. You know some times people get a room and try and fill it because they arn't sure they will get a room for Otakon and arn't a part of a big group. I actually got a room for Otakon two years ago and tried to fill it because I wan't sure I would find people to room with the next year. Plus while I do enjoy staying with people. I have been in rooms where the rooms holder is a nazi about rules. I had one that wanted everyone back in the room by 11pm. I had to back out because I don't want a mother to sit and tell me what to do.
  8. I don't see any need for people to be booking rooms this early.

Whatever happened to calmly waiting until Otakon is sorted out everything with the hotels and the hotels have everything in their systems? Hell, can’t people wait until Otakon even opens pre reg?

  9. I see Bleach still around next year, but I wish people would stop with the stupid boring trash that is Naruto.

Of the current "popular" shows, there is only one that I have any sort of remote interest in. Bleach. The rest, Naruto, FMA, Dragonball, One Peice, etc are just boring. I never found them all that interesting.
