  1. I've seen very few people self report on Twitter that they had a positive Covid test after Otakon, though at least 2 people report that they got notice, I'm guessing via a contact tracing app, that they were exposed to Covid. There were far more people reporting negative tests. One unfortunate report was that Otakon guest Beau Billingslea had a positive Covid test on August 5th, so he encouraged everyone who had contact with him to get tested.

Yeah I thought I got 2021 in there sometime in the last year, but apparently I did not.

Things are in progress, but also I have about 100 other things to do post-con that take priority.
Paying bills is never really "fun", and for that matter neither is filling out sales/use tax returns.

As for this year, it will likely be early September based on other deadlines.

Great! I just wanted to bring it up as I figured the 2021 statistics update was overlooked sometime between 2021 and 2022. Of course the current post-con activities take priority and I look forward to seeing the page updated with both years later.

Thanks, as always, Matt for the response and information. Much appreciated.

Typically this gets updated a few weeks or so post con, because it takes time to reconcile all the various systems, people who upgraded memberships, etc.  it’s usually @MattTheMinion who does this, I think..

Most of us older staffers are still recovering!

Oh sure, I wasn't expecting 2022 to be updated any time soon. I was asking about 2021, which is still missing! 🙂

  4. Hey folks! Now that hotel reservations are open for Otakon 2022, now seems a good time to invite people to join us on the UNOFFICIAL Otakon Discord Server.

    https://discord.gg/rcXMdHuESE

Come chat with your fellow Otakon goers, discuss your cosplans, and connect with others for rooms or rides. And, of course, talk about anime!

    See you there!

Saturday is kind of a "wild card"....since it's the longest day dealer's is open

This isn't true. The Dealer Hall is open for 8 hours both Friday and Saturday. Typically 12PM to 8 PM Friday and 10AM to 6PM Saturday.

Even now, with all this tech, I might still miss panels because they're scheduled against each other. (Would that all my problems were this trivial.) Good news is that I've seen a couple of them at previous cons, and there's nothing stopping me from 'flipping channels' to switch between them.

If you have multiple devices, you could possibly attend both panels simultaneously!

That being said, there was mention that Otakon was looking into avenues to sell merchandise from this year's con. Was there any progress on that?

They said on the Otakon.Online announcement stream last night that there WILL be merch available!

-I really wish I had known about some of the premieres happening. I literally only found out about Promare during the GKids panel, and I had no idea on City Hunter or Uta Prince. Maybe just advertise these on facebook and twitter and such the week before the con? I mean, if you said something back in february, no chance I'd remember it come July.

This stopped happening in the past couple years, but in the years prior to that, there would be a page on the website with information on Premieres and Special Screenings. It would be really nice if that would come back. I asked on social media this year if it would be back and got a "maybe" gif response, but nothing happened.
Can we please get the Premieres and Special Screenings page back on the website to make these events more visible?

  8. Name of Hotel: Embassy Suites

Was it part of the official block? Yes

    Price: $217 / night

    Type of room: King Suite

The Good: The suites are spacious, with living area which includes a table and chairs, sleeper sofa, coffee table, arm chair, and a large TV. The room included refrigerator and microwave, and had a second sink on the counter outside of the bathroom, which made getting ready in the morning a bit quicker. The bedroom had its own large TV.
Hot breakfast was included with a made to order omelette line and a line for buffet-style breakfast. Breakfast included sausage and bacon, fried potatoes, eggs, and a different starch each day (pancakes, waffles, french toast) with warm syrup. Fresh fruit, pastries, yogurt, cereals, and beverages round out the options.
I didn't take advantage of this, but they also had an evening reception each day with complimentary alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages and light snacks included.
The location is great. It is a short walk from the convention center (0.4 miles) and located with convenient access to a nearby CVS, parking garages, and food options.
Staff was friendly and efficient. The hotel's bag storage on Sunday was quick and easy to drop off and pick up.

The Bad: Nothing really bad so these will be minor nitpicks. The hallways are open on one side and overlook the lobby, so noise may travel up into the halls at times. The pool was crowded on Friday night and a band-aid was spotted on the ground of the pool area. Manage your expectations if sleeping on the sleeper sofa. It is somewhere to sleep, but not nearly as comfortable as an actual bed. The room had a paper bag marked as a bag for recycling, but when housekeeping took the bag on Friday, a new one was not left for us.

Final thoughts: An excellent place to stay. Highly recommend.

To be honest the initial number released is a preliminary number based on raw sales data. Last year there was a communications breakdown involving how the 2-day and 1-day badges along with some at-con comps were tracked and a lot of them got double counted. That's why it should be announced as a preliminary number. This year we centralized the attendance count a bit more in order to be closer to the final numbers, but as we go through and check the counts it can still swing either way.

I'm always grateful for your straightforward answers. Thank you very much for shedding some light on the attendance numbers.

Since I'm the one who has audited the attendance numbers for years, the ones posted on our website are accurate. I don't touch Wikipedia as starting down that road would end up as a huge time sink.

As for updated numbers, it takes a couple of weeks to go through the data and weed out duplicates, identify people who did not show up even after they bought a membership, find and correct exceptions that were made in reg in the name of customer service, confirm with staff about comps for industry, contractors, etc. I'm fairly certain we will be close to the preliminary reported number, but we want to be thorough about it and make sure we are consistent on how we report them.

Good to know that the ones posted on the website is accurate. Is the care and thoroughness being taken with this year's attendance number a compensation for announcing the 2018 attendance of 29,293 last year, even going as far as releasing it in a press release 3 days after the convention, but then ending up over 1,100 off the accurate attendance of 28,116 on the website?

  13. The battle for supremacy is on as we engage to match wits in Game Night - Unofficial Otakon Quiplash.
    Friday, 07/19/2019 at 9:00PM EDT

We've loaded the Jackbox Party Pack favorite Quiplash 2 with dozens (over 5 dozen!) of custom prompts relating to Otakon, anime, and anything else we could think of! Players are given a prompt, such as "Why Shinji really didn't want to get in the robot". Players then put down their funniest, wittiest, or whatever answer they think will get them the votes! The answers are put head to head and the best, or sometimes the worst, response wins! Win or lose, this is one event you won't want to miss, as Quiplash is already a fun time, so Quiplash + anime + Otakon should be an amazing time!
