    Backpack or Messenger Bag?

My husband actually snagged one of those 'sling' backpacks on Amazon over the weekend and I think it's going to be a great con bag. It makes it so easy to swing it around to the front and get things like wallets, phones, etc from inside. It's not huge so as to overload yourself, but also not so small you can't fit a number of essentials.

    Good Weather

Though the forecast here is calling for scattered storms the weekend of Otakon, it's likely to change a bit. It looks like Friday/Sunday have a low chance of ran, but Saturday has a 60% chance. We've been having a LOT of rain here (over 10" last week) and it seems like it'll be continuing for a bit, but fingers crossed Otakon stays relatively dry!

The 2018 Washington Area Travelers Advisory Thread

You may want to compare which is faster (Pentagon > Blue vs L'Enfant > Silver). I know taking Silver the entire way has more stops, but that loop around the water is LOOOOOOOOONG on the Blue line.

Mine are out for delivery - I'm in northern VA for reference

Are there really no hentai screenings this year? I know two video rooms haven't been posted yet, but one of my favorite things to do with my friend was to go to these screenings and joke around with the audience.

    Where is Parking?

It seems like Thursday isn't available; even when I just try to add Thursday to the dates it doesn't seem to add it.

Hatsune Miku concert is just a few days away!

I'll be at the DC show! I work near the Anthem so it's an easy walk after work

    Anime swap meet?

I asked this same thing once on twitter recently and I *believe* it has to do with local laws (don't quote me on that, it's just what I heard). There are a few conventions that do this, but again I think it depends on local laws on whether it is allowed or not. I really wish Otakon did this - I have so many blind box items and other items i would love to sell/trade!

    Hype Thread!

We're almost a month away now... Let's talk about what we're excited to see/do at Otakon! What cosplay(s) are you working on/planning to wear? What are some things that you think everyone should try at Otakon? What merch are you hunting for? I'm planning to cosplay as Kaho from Blend-S as well as a TIE Fighter Pilot! I have a few minor things to do for my Kaho cosplay (style the wig, iron the dress, etc.), but I'm super excited to wear her! I'm mostly excited to just go to the convention and be around other fans and cosplayers - I haven't been to a convention since JANUARY (MAGFest), so I'm itching to be at a convention again. I'm hoping there are some hentai screening panels again at night - my friend and I love to go to those and make jokes with the people around us. I'm not sure what i'm hunting for as far as merch is concerned, but I definitely want some more stickers for my sewing machine, maybe some prints and charms as well.

'White Civil Rights Rally' application approved for DC

The emails I'm referring to were talking about the specific protest that was happening outside of my place of work yesterday, but they did say areas to avoid, what to do, etc. I'm sure that buildings near the rally would do the same thing, but it's more for the employees of those buildings. But there were TONS of police out yesterday and the protest was VERY small - DC police definitely don't mess around, and they DEFINITELY will not be messing around with the rally in August.

Not sure if this will help make anyone feel better... but I work in DC. Today there's going to be a small protest outside of the building I work in from 12-2, and there are already tons of police present and it hasn't even started. My building has been getting numerous emails in advance and advising employees where to avoid/what to do, etc. I know it isn't the same, but as a life-time Northern VA/DC resident, I can safely say that DC does not mess around with rallies and protests. The one near me is going to be small, but the police presence is already very large. EDIT: I just spoke with my friend, a DC Police Officer, to see what they may be doing for the rally:

Well Otakon certainly can't reschedule their convention.. The best thing you can do is continue to attend - these people would love nothing more than for their fear mongering and aggression to keep people from doing what they love... so let's prove them wrong. The best thing you can do is stay close to the convention center and travel in groups, where possible. I'm certain if you're alone that you can ask a group to let you stick close to them if you feel unsafe.

'White Civil Rights Rally' application approved for DC

Regretfully, this disgusting rally has received an approved permit: http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/393366-charlottesville-organizer-plans-white-civil-rights-rally-in-dc We can only hope that security will be on top of all this and that they won't spread towards the convention center. I just know that this group would prey on cosplayers, and I especially fear for the safety of PoC attendees...
