  1. What payments are accepted varies from booth to booth. That said, I've never run into a booth in dealer hall or artist alley that only accepted cards. Not all booths might not be able to accept card, either. In fact, most booths seem to prefer cash. I've noticed quite a few that will either give you a discount for using cash or will charge extra to use a card. Cash is king for the most part at Otakon.

I know the math is a concern but Otakon has had attendance caps before and survived.

Otakon has only had attendance caps 4 times in its history. 2005 (22k, cap hit), 2006 (25k, cap not hit), 2014 (35k, cap not hit) and 2015 (35k, cap not hit). And those caps were due to mainly literally not being able to fit enough people in the con center. There has not been less than 20k people at Otakon since 2003, almost 2 decades ago/ I fully expect that if a cap is instituted, like you want, Otakon, at the bare minimum, will be asking for donations again just so survive. More likely, the con will be gone for good.

  3. The Good:

    - Yay Otakon is back!

    - Pretty much everyone abided by the face mask mandate. I spent a large chunk of time in the dealers hall, artist alley and gaming hall and can't really recall seeing anyone without their mask on.

    - The few panels that I went to were pretty much perfectly ran and getting people in and out was pretty smooth. Great line management.

    The Bad:

    - It felt like there were a lot fewer dealers/artists in each alley this year. A bit disappointing, but covid gonna covid. But on that note, with fewer dealers, why were all the booths basically crammed together? There was A TON of empty space in each hall, and I feel like that should have been used to space out the booths a bit and have been less on top of each other.

    - All the water fountains being turned off. I get covid and all that, but it would have at least been nice to have a place to fill up a water bottle.

    The Ugly:

    - There needs to be a new system worked out for the Marriott tunnel entrance. There was a couple of times where people were nearly knocked over because they had no where to go at the top of the escalator. Anyone being stopped/pulled aside for a bag check basically halts the line and causes backups.

  4. I disagree completely with having a cap for Otakon. If you're going to do that, you might as well not even bother holding the con. It's completely not even close to feasible to even enforce 6ft social distancing. Even with only 10k people, things would have been just as bad.

Just having the mask mandate was perfectly fine, imo. Personally, I can't recall running into anyone that wasn't wearing their mask when they were supposed to, and I spent a large chunk of the con in the dealers hall, AA, and the gaming hall, where congregation is highest.

Not concerned in the slightest about this being a "super spreader" event. If you're not vaccinated and/or are worried about infecting others around you that don't/can't get the vaccine, then just don't attend the con. Although I must say, I dunno why people expected low con numbers from the get go. Otakon is basically the first "major" anime con to come back, so I was expecting people to flock back and bring in a bunch of people that usually would go to other cons that are closer to them.

Sort of. The indoor mask mandate will still be in place in MD until 70% of adults are vaccinated according to Hogan.

    To quote from the article:

"Starting Saturday, Marylanders no longer need to wear masks to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in most settings, Gov. Larry Hogan announced Friday evening.

Masks still will be required on public transportation and in schools, airports, day care centers and health care facilities, such as hospitals and doctors’ offices. Local governments and individual businesses can opt to keep mask requirements in place."

I was just reading an article on Variety about the cancellation of SDCC. The governor of California is also saying that:

“The prospect of mass gatherings is negligible at best until we get to herd immunity and we get to a vaccine,” Newsom said. “So large-scale events that bring in hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands of strangers, all together across every conceivable difference, health and otherwise, is not in the cards based upon our current guidelines and current expectations.”

Newsom acknowledged that expectations can change, and he resisted setting any sort of timeline.

But, he added, “When you suggest June, July, August, it is unlikely.”

Which I take it means that it's most likely that Anime Expo will be cancelled as well.

    Anime Expo cancelled, too.

  7. As someone who works as a Medical Laboratory Scientist and has worked directly with blood samples being sent to the CDC for Coronavirus testing, I dont think its fear mongering, at all. I know we're having to process samples under a biohazard hood as well as taking extra precautions to prevent aerosols from potentially spreading/contaminating. A vaccine wont be available until the end of the year at the earliest and containment of the disease is gonna be reliant on all the world's governments doing what they're supposed to.

Personally, I dont think the issue is with the virus and its lethality. If you're healthy adult, most seem to be able to fight off the virus with no ill effects so far. The problem is that the virus is demonstrating to be easily transmittable and is able to survive outside the body for some time. This puts the young, elderly,  and immunocompromised at a high risk.

A decision on cancel public gatherings/cons is decision that obviously wont need to be made for a few months, like you said, but when cancelling Comiket and the Olympics are being talked about when those are months away, its definitely fair to discuss when Otakon will be happening during the same timeframe.
