Does anyone have experience with this Best Western?
http://book.bestwestern.com/bestwestern/pr...pertyCode=21035
Myself and a few friends will be staying there, we already have reservations for it. It was the closest hotel that I could find that would not blast all of my con money away.
Just wondering if anyone has experience with it and any pros and cons.
That hotel is a few miles east of the Harbor and the Convention Center, in an area that's not great but isn't as bad as some parts of B-more. It anchors a large truck stop/ "travel plaza". You shouldn't try to walk to the BCC (too far, and not great neighborhoods), and your best bet is probably a cab.

Oh, how I love the reactions that I get. They're always a mixed bag and I love it. The public's reaction is one of the things I am usually excited for each Otakon. It's not near the top, but it's certainly on the list.
While I had plenty of experiences with Yankee fans in '06, '07 was a fun year as well.
I was cosplaying my Gurulokovich Soldier from Metal Gear Solid 2:

I'm in the middle.
Now, one would expect the general public to avoid me or give me odd stares while shielding their children from such a horrific sight of a man in camouflage, but in '07 I had more people approach me wanting just general information.
I wanted to know what was going on, but all these people creep me out...you looked somewhat normal and someone I could ask.
That above sentence, worded differently in some ways, was asked many, MANY times by people who live in the city and tourists alike. I was shocked myself. Out of all the colorful, happy looking costumes, they all approach the guy in military gear and camouflage and ask him what's up. I had a lot of great conversations and all the people I spoke to were polite and had a good time just talking to me and learning about what was going on from the looks of it. Well, save for one guy who asked me about the convention, had a conversation with me, then tried to pull off a little panhandling against me.
I even had a Baltimore Police officer approach me and tell me that they wish they had their camera to take pictures of my costume and with the people I was with.
So, even if the public looks at all of us as entertainment and for laughs and giggles for us being out of the norm, it's still fun to see just how they react.
Yeah, you Metal Gear guard cosplayers always have OUTSTANDINGLY detailed and well-done cosplays. And you do come the closer to "normal" than any other series that might make one dye their hair an insane color or carry around a freakishly large and strange-looking prop.
Hats off to you for being one of the few cosplayers that random people off the street can actually approach. LOL

Depending on what soldier you are going to be really depends on how you can approach it, for example, my Praying Mantis PMC's exclamation point:

This is a candid shot I found online of me at Ohayocon 2008. (I have no idea who took the picture and I do not recall it being taken, haha, but it could have been someone curious how I did the exclamation point and wanted to take a picture of how I did it)
The idea came from a friend of mine who made the two exclamation points and was kind enough to give me one. All he did was use some foam, red paint and two pieces of wire, then attached it to his helmet.
Luckily for me, the PMC helmet has holes in the back, so I was able to easily just wrap it around my holes and through the goggle strap.
Also, be sure to show up to one of our gatherings, we'd love to see you there! Information is here: /index.php?showtopic=13816">http://board.otakon.com/index.php?showtopic=13816
Hope to see all of you at Otakon 2008!

Alright, first of all, I know that this thread is ancient. But I'd rather update it than make a new one. So, moderators, forgive me.
Some information is up about the Metal Gear Solid gathering, we plan on having two gatherings, one on Friday and one on Saturday.
Currently Saturday's information is up. I believe we will again be having a joint operation gathering with the Resident Evil cosplayers on Friday, but I'm not 100% sure and I will update when I get that information.
We already have a very large amount of interest (probably due to MGS4's release ) Including a whole load of Meryls and Snakes this year, and a platoon of Praying Mantis PMCs! So we're excited to see new faces and we will be happy to once again see the familiar faces!
For those who want to go to the gathering, here is all the information for the Saturday gathering as of June 15th
Saturday Gathering.
When: Saturday, August 9th, 2008. Otakon: 2008
Where: Fountain Area underneath the flags.
Time: 1430 Hours (2:30 PM)
I will get Friday's information as soon as possible.
If you have any questions, comments or concerns please feel free to send me a private message.
We hope to see you there!

I find it odd that a lot of the food places are disappearing from the general area, is there some sort of business decline?
Or are all the food places starting to pop up more around the stadiums rather than the inner harbor and the convention center area?

Glorious comrades of Metal Gear cosplay!
Your hour has come yet again. Well, it's a couple hundred days away, but trust me, that hour will come.
It's time for Metal Gear cosplay 2008.
Information from our cosplay.com thread.
Metal Gear turns 21!Metal Gear Solid turns 21, so why not celebrate with a gathering at Otakon 2008? I'm going to aim to make this a great gathering. Hopefully this year we will have a Metal Gear Solid panel. LETS DO IT! Last year, Otakon lacked without our precious panel. If someone wants to take charge and stand up to make a great panel, please do so. PM Me, as I will be MORE than happy to assist and co-host. However, I do not believe I could host one myself, I just do not think I could come up with enough content. So, if someone has ideas or someone wants to host one, PM me with your ideas and lets get the ball rolling right now.
If anyone has ANY ideas what so ever. Please, please PM me and we can discuss. I would love to get some ideas rolling to make this the best Otakon Metal Gear gathering we can pull off.

Place I stayed: Residence Inn Inner Harbor/Downtown
Number of people in room: 4
Hotel Staff: Hotel staff was VERY polite, helpful and was interested in the convention. Fun to talk to and always were in good spirits. Anything we asked for we received in a timely manner.
Walk to the con center: Approx. 5-10mins
The bad:
-Parking: Hotel parking is valet only at a crunching 28 dollars a day. We ended up finding a better location to park without killing our wallets.
-Television: You'd expect a fairly high-end place to have a little better TVs in the room. They were good, but I think they could do better for the price we payed.
-Loading area: The loading ramp on thursday was packed, we had to park in the no parking area in an alley next to the hotel. This was the same case on monday when we left, and one of the people staying with us got a ticket while we were all loading things into the vehicles.
-Only has small garbage bins in the room.
-Internet connection was possible, but sketchy at times.
The good:
-Location: Not far from the con at all on Light Street.
-The Room: So roomy, comfortably fit four people. Kitchen was an awesome touch! Two TVs was another good thing. Lots of space for cosplayers to have their stuff set out.
-Increased security: Elevators can only be used with keycards. After hours the hotel can only be entered via your hotel card. This kept any unwanted people from lurking the hotel.
- Staff: As mentioned, helpful and friendly. Even offered to help carry our bags!
- Breakfast: Though some of the food was very meh, it was a great touch to have a hot breakfast every morning. Lots of room to sit also.
- Very clean and very comfortable. Temperature was always well kept.
Overall, the stay was great and I'm already looking into staying again next year.
