Otacafe Feedback - Karaoke room. What did you think?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Mike here, your lovable host for Otacafe. I am the one who kept singing L'arc en ciel and Gackt songs. Also the one calling for people to come to stage and in charge of the equipment. Yeah, that's me.

Anyways, I was wondering if you guys had a fun time. What did you like? What didn't you like? Was the staff helpful and friendly? Comments on any of the staff? Comments on the setup of the Otacafe? Any improvements you suggest? This is where you can voice your opinion! To make Otacafe the best Karaoke experience out there! YATTA!

So tell us about your experiences there. :P

I thought it was great! I wish I had the guts to get up there and sing. While all were entertaining, several of the singers were really really good!

My only question is, why weren't the trash cans emptied more often? The place really looked thrashed later in the day.

None of the songs I wanted you guys had. There's a complaint you probably hear a lot. At that point I guess it's BYOMP3, so next year I'll try to come prepared.

Not enough chest signage. =D

I'll be honest, I wasn't looking too hard, but were there things the usual cafe has? bagels, coffee, some sort of munching food? It was an awesome place to sit and relax, though we had to move out because we couldn't chat over the singers. :P

Other than that, it was fun for us. =3

Haha I loved the Karaoke and Mike you are an awesome host and very cool dude especially when you were feeling those Gackt songs you were singing, you had all the ladies in the crowd like  haha.

I was the dude who kept singing Wind by Akeboshi. The only thing that I want in the future is a Keyboard/Piano to play on while I sing. I was told by one of the helpful ladies printing the lyrics that one was requisitioned but it never came in. So that's all I'm hoping for in 2008. A Good Keyboard Hookup. :P

I have another question who was that one beautiful girl with the beautiful singing voice that was accompanied by the Staff Member on Clarinet? She has a lot of skill.

That was the lovely Diana XD She's practically a con idol at this point. She came in first place in the first Otaku Idol ever. Last year she performed a song in Otaku Idol Concert. And I hear she's come in about first in at least 2 other Otaku Idol events. Here they are performing the OP to Lucky Star: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeIR8A7CeKE

Ok who plays percussion, bass, electric guitar, and/or sings?

I want to also try to track down that Spike Spiegel cosplayer who was playing saxophone all day.

Current Songs I Have In My Repetoire:

Akeboshi - Wind

Flow - Go! Fighting Dreamers

Yoko Kanno - The Real Folk Blues

Utada Hikaru - Hikari & Sanctuary/Passion (Needs Work, haven't played it in a while)

Inuyasha - Most of the ending themes I've found.

Wolf's Rain - Gravity

Any other good songs anyone can think of for a band?

I enjoyed it this year. Maybe part of it was that there were less bands and less people in general so the line moved faster?

thx for hosting Mike.

I've been participating in Otakon karaoke for the last eight years and you guys just keep getting better. I always enjoy myself and I like the fact that you guys (staff and other participants) always encourage those that are a bit shy when they perform. :) You guys always have a smile for folks, participate, and I usually get a good laugh from the random jokes. I think I've been in there so much that those who recognize me have reached the point where they've stop asking me if I need music or lyrics because I always bring my own. But in short you guys rock! (pun intended)

Oh! And you guys finally pronounced my name correctly. :D

Ok who plays percussion, bass, electric guitar, and/or sings?

I was the guy doing the covers with the electric guitar. Let's do a band next year. I can do:

Bleach-Asterisk, Houki Boshi

FMA-Ready Steady Go!, Rewrite

NANA-Rose, A little pain, Wish

Ouran-Sakura Kiss, Shissou

Parakiss-do you wanna

cowboy bebop-the real folk blues

trigun-HT

Melancholy of haruhi suzumiya-God Knows

Niea_7-gokigen

gundam wing-heero's theme, rythm emotion

Very cool, do you have the leadsheets for all those songs or did you learn them by ear? I could probably find all those off of Ichigos or the like so no problem. So it seems we have an electric guitar, awesome. Now percussion, bass, and maybe a Vocalist then again if we were the band I suppose the vocalist could be any person who chose to sing one of the songs on our list.

I learned them all from tabs, but I don't remember where they all are. Try ultimate-guitar, animechords, etc. and if you don't have any luck i'll transcribe them.

Almost forgot:

Death Note-The World, Zetsubou Billy

Ha the only ones I've heard of from your list would be Bleach, FMA, Trigun, and Cowboy Bebop so I'm going to have to check into them and hear whether or not they'd be viable with piano and other instrumentation. It's all possible I'm sure.

Oh also:

Ghost in the shell-Rise, Lithium Flower

Rise was actually originally a techno song I converted to guitar. Sakura kiss has a piano version and some others have piano or keyboard parts.

I loved it this year. BTW - with it being a con...with geeks and all...it would be PERFECT if you guys managed to get Genshiken songs as well as:

the World - Death Note

ALUMINA - Death Note

READY STEADY GO - FullMetal Alchemist

To All Tha Dreamers - Yakitate!! Japan

Just so you know - I was the Onizuka that sang GTO's "Poison" & Keitaro that sang Rizelmine's "Hajimete Shimasho"

The Otacafe was awesome! I'd been looking forward to doing karaoke in costume for a long time and really enjoyed it, and watching the other performances. I also enjoyed HydeCiel's Gackt songs and I haven't been able to get Motteke! Sailor Fuku out of my head since watching Diana do it!<3

This was my 3rd Otakon and so far the best one yet. Thanks to everyone who staffed the Otacafe! :)

It would be nice if the lighting was lowered at the back end of the room where the stage is--sort of a ambiance thing. It's kind of like trying to sing in an operating room!

I had a blast. 2007 was my third time up at Otakon Karaoke and probably my favorite so far. There were a lot of good performances and I had fun listening while I was waiting my turn.

I was the girl who sung the vocal version of Good manners and Customs from Guilty gear XX and faked passing out at the very end (Not to mention I screamed near the end, too). XD

Question...At one point during my performance, I glanced to the side and I noticed one of the staff either taking my picture or recording my performance (I definitely saw a camera). Was someone recording me? If so, is there anyway that the footage (Or photo) of my performance can be sent to me? XD

Wow... glad everyone was so happy with us this year! ^_^ A few sidenotes about things:

The chair to table ratio has been the same for at least the last 7 years or so... while it may have seemed odd at the moment, rest assured that we often run out of chairspace despite that -_-; Sometimes people come in large groups and it also depends on when in the day you're there.

Our song list was again this year annoyed by hard drive failures and as such missing recent stuff (aka FMA, Naruto and Bleach). Also, certain groups don't put out karaokes or they just don't exist for individual songs. For example, Gravitation has NO karaoke files. We cry over that.

To the guilty gear person: That was awesome. I wasn't the staffer taking pics, sadly. But one of the better moments of the con for me was talking to people and then stopping and going "Wait... is that Guilty Gear?!" Thanks for singing something I've never seen anyone do :D

Yeah, I'm going to second the suggestion about the lighting, except I'd suggest that the lighting be lowered everywhere in the room. It'd also be nice if you could get some kind of gelled backlighting for the stage and neon lights for the interior, and have more tables and less auditorium seating (the few times I was there it looked like you guys had more chairs than you needed, and that the most "cafe-style" part of the cafe was pushed to the back), but I don't know how much control you have over that sort of thing.

Of course, I'm making all these suggestions with a specific atmosphere in mind. I think I came with the expectation that the space would look more like a night club or a karaoke bar; when I got there, the actual decor seemed kind of... depressing, by comparison. Especially the brown curtain behind the stage and the excessive lighting.

But, again, I don't know how much latitude you guys were given for that sort of thing. Overall, you did a really great job!

From what I saw, the lights could either be on or off, no in between. Also you have to remember, the Otacafe is not just karaoke, it's also a place for people to chill during con, so I doubt it can be turned into a more traditional karaoke bar. But that's just my opinion.

Suggestion to SoraVII... I thought Mike, hydeciel, was a purty good singer, and by the looks of it he wouldn't mind to be in a band, and you still need someone that can sing...eehh?? anyone feelin me... no? ^.^()

^.^()

Loved the Otacafe! Only went there really late at night, but I'm too shy anyways so it worked out quiiite well. If I do happen to do Otakon again next year (no idea where I'll be next year) I'll definitely be lookin forward to the Otacafe!

I noticed that when my friend was singing (he was the guy singing/rapping "TORIIIIIIICO" by Kick the Can Crew feat. Cassette Vision), he was NOWHERE as loud as he usually is. A lot of people who I thought were actually projecting their voice ended up not being heard from across the room. I'm not sure whether its the volume for the mic or the mic itself, but you know its bad when the instrumental vocals are louder than the actual singer's voice.

I'm not sure how far you guys can go in terms of gettin' more songs, but that of course would help. I didn't understand how they had every GTO song, including Poison from the live action, except the Driver's High.

Maybe I'm just spoiled because I go to a karaoke box on a regular basis...

My only gripe is that a LOT of people talked during the performance of other singers.

- Whether you find the performance to your liking or not, be friggin respectful... x_x

- The annoying thing was that the loud talking came from the front of the room. I mean, whispers are fine, but they were really disruptive. Or maybe it's just me that has a pet peeve with it. But either way...I wish people who want to talk move towards the back or something... >.>;

- I really like hearing songs from classic anime that I've never heard before. This one guy was singing from a Sentai series, but I can't remember the name. He even did the moves for the superhero character. I thought it was pretty creative.

xD anyway, I loved singing the duet with DJ Wisely. Good times. =P

Yeah, the Ouran cosplayer. I remember you. You played a few songs I recognized. I think we all should pursue this band idea. I can either play bass or sing (or switch on and off). Here is a sample of my preferences:

the Pillows: Crazy Sunshine, Ride On Shooting Star, Terminal Heaven's Rock

hide: Rocket Dive

GLAY: Yuuwaku, Stay Tuned

PornoGraffiti: Melissa

...and anything else anyone wants to play, I can work out. I learn everything by ear because sheet music gets in my way. -_-

Ha I think Bass would be cool that way we'd have Piano, Eletric Guitar, Bass, and as for singer either we could all cover certain parts of a song or have people sing to us or any other # of combinations.

I thoroughly enjoy Karaoke at Otakon every year. I've been there for the past 4 years and the staff is ALWAYS very accommodating. I've been to karaoke events at various conventions all over... some great (NekoCon), others very not-so-much (ANIMAZEMENT). Otakon always seems to be very unique in its atmosphere. Certain conventions (ANIMAZEMENT) can stand to learn a lot from how Otakon runs its karaoke room.

Now I only wish there was some medication I could have taken on Sunday morning before I tried to sing "Kimi Ga Inai Natsu" with the really weak excuse of a singing voice I had :) Oh, and actually making Otaku Idol would have helped too... :)

Oh... do you accept musical donations to the Otacafe Karaoke library? I've got a lot of Japanese music and a few karaoke tracks that I notice you didn't already have (such as "Makafushigi Adventure", which I sang on Friday afternoon)...

I'm an Otacafe junkie, I spend so much time in there during Otakon. I just love seeing people do karaoke, and I enjoy doing it as well. Keep up the good work.

I bring my own music to work with, it's too troublesome to look for what you need.

I had all intentions of dropping by this past year but was sort of stuck stalking AAA around w/ my sister so I never got to it. I wish I would have though so Mike you please keep singing those Laruku & Gackt songs so I can see it next time lol I'll definitely have to get up there & sing next year!

As for the band idea, that sounds awesome! I always thought that'd be cool to have a lil J-Rock cover band. I play electric guitar too and can do pretty much all of L'Arc~en~Ciel songs -- nowhere near Ken Kitamura's skillz but the chords I got down. But I've always wanted to play Honey & Heaven's Drive or get a P'Unk~en~Ciel band together for the crowd! :)

Well, with this being my first Otakon, I can't say anything bad about you all...but it was excellent to say the least. I didn't get to sing (I believe we had to leave, and by the time we'd come back, my number had been passed). But next year, I'm making up for that

In terms of song choice, considering that you didn't really have "professional" equipment (y'know the fancy karaoke machine that displayed the words and everything), you all did great! (I've been to Japan recently, their karaoke stuff is amazing) And I am also putting a band together for band night, though I was also hoping to push not for just a band night, but for that to be an entire event over the whole weekend (perhaps get a different room, and a default drumset? -So that each percussionist doesn't have to lug around his/her drumset-).

I can understand if it can't happen in 2008, but I'd love for it to be possible in 2009!

Oh, and in case anyone needed a percussionist/vocalist/pianist for a band, I'm available!

Repetoire

Most Ajikan Songs

Most Gackt Songs

Most L'arc~en~Ciel Songs

Dir en Grey - Ain't Afraid to Die (I can do piano & drums on this one)

Most UVERworld Songs

FLOW - COLORS

FLOW - Go!!!!

FLOW - Days

Miyavi

CHEMISTRY

Eh, the list goes on...so if you're interested, drop me a PM, and I'll see what I can work out. (Willing to do unknown songs! It's always good to broaden my horizon)
