Haseo_92 0 Posted November 14, 2007 Report Share Posted November 14, 2007 Hi! I was wondering if anyone from any other anime clubs could help me out. This is the 2nd year that the anime club in my high school is running and it's off to a rocky start this year. We only meet once every three weeks with an hour to do things, so not much usually gets done. I am VP of the club this year and i need some suggestions to really get the club going, but keep in mind, this is a high school club in a school that didn't let the anime club become official the first time that it was suggested to the board of education because they thought that the anime club was a satanic cult.....and most of us have no income....So if you have any tips, please, let me know! Nowadays, sitting around in a room to watch an anime isn't enough due to the availability of free material. To make it work it has to basically multitask. Try making it a gaming and anime club because everyone loves coming for board games. Then you can sit around and talk about anime at the same time. If you are just interested in showing anime, then that limits what you want to do. Sanalear's suggestion of expanding your club is a good idea. Another would be to expand your anime club to other oriental things, like finding foods that you see on anime, or the things that are particularly Japanese in the shows you watch. When Ranma 1/2 first came out, there was a huge desire for okonomiyaki that hit my area. And origami is still very popular back home. Another thing you might do to help alleviate financial difficulty is to write to companies like Funimation saying that you have a high school anime club that is just starting out and would like their help in picking anime to show. Sometimes, companies will mail you things like free videos to watch and freebies (I remember someone mentioning that they got a bunch of sample music cds and anime postcards) to hand out as well. With only an hour to do things, you may also want to think about using the hour for things other than watching things, but that are anime in other ways. Like working on a group cos-play. Or creating your own anime music videos. Or planning a club outing to a convention (you could also work fund-raising into that to help cover costs as well). Some of the highlights of fun were me making a trip to maido once a week to pick up japanese snacks, and every other week we'd do like pop'n music for a bit. Haseo_92 0 Posted November 15, 2007 Author Report Share Posted November 15, 2007 well this year we've had a few more out-of-school activities, such as anime parties. we sit for 13 hours and watch an entire series. we have also started art contests and we did have a halloween cosplay party a few weeks ago. We make some comics here and there and have done an amv contest last year, but more people like to watch them rather than make them, so that didn't turn out too well. In my basement we have tons (almost literally) and i bring in a new anime to watch every week. The only issue with that is that it has to be TV-16 and under. I did kind of want to start an origamithing, but i haven't found the time to learn it yet myself. And on our club website does have all the details for otakon kept up to date, so they always know what's going on with that. Yay for shameless advertising! we do bring in pocky and some other things every now and then but unfortunately i can't bring in Ramune because it's in a glass bottle...so that's about what we do. We are hoping to expand the club a little bit, i want to try to teach japanese in that club too but first i would need to learn it myself. Basically, someone went to the local asian grocery and bought a bunch of sushi-making stuff (mostly vegetable sushi, because fish gets weird in DIY group-recipe-stuff), and also a TON of green tea in tea bags, some snack foods, and some dessert-type stuff (some Pocky but also more traditional desserts; it was a while ago and I can't remember their names, sorry), and threw a party after school. You could make-your-own sushi, have some manga or J-magazines sitting around; some karaoke; and just fun little stuff like that. Make it more about Japan and less about "those weird big-eyed cartoons" and your school might open up to it a bit more. Also, I'm not sure how feasible it is (especially during your time at the school), but see if your school or your school district would be interested in establishing a sister-school relationship with a Japanese high school. It's a wonderful cultural experience, and a great way to get to know other people. Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Just incase you are interested, the reason I suggested a games club/anime/japan club is because near where I live there was one that started out just as anime/japan stuff and had like 5 members. Then we also turned it into a gaming club and now we hit close to 20 members every Friday who stay for at least 5 hours at a time. Branching out into a cultural club is doable, but it is still so limited appeal especially in a high school that it would attract the same people who could come just for anime probably. I don't have any authority in my school's anime club but we try to do things for charity or raise money for trips to places like Sakura Matsuri or some hot spring trip I'm hearing about amongst meh anime breathren. Or else try getting Japanese pen pals. The teacher in charge or anime club has connections for all of us to get penpals. >=D Besides if the school gives you a hard time, you gotta edujumacate the ignorant people because I know I do that on the daily basis at school ^.^ Good luck with your anime club Quote Link to post Share on other sites
