Programming Suggestions for 2009

Recommended Posts

It's about whether we can get appropriate permission from whoever holds the rights. In some cases, we can go direct to the source if the property doesn't have a US distributor. For example, one of our prior guests, Mr Suwa of YTV, is a producer for the Yatterman series, and he may be able to direct us to the correct person to get permission to show the movie.

It's fair to say that our policy has evolved regarding unlicensed properties -- as the legal situation has evolved, so has our relationship with various industry players, and so has the amount of attention paid by Japan.

The return of the 35MM room would be great. I believe it was missing last year, but the previous year, it was great. It showed classics, in both anime and live action. That was really the highlight of 2007's show, for me. Also, more live-action films would be very welcomed. There are alot of Chinese movies, from mainland China, as opposed to Hong Kong, that are really good, and deserve showing.

I'm not involved with the programming side of the con so I can't talk about the reasons why, but the Hi-def theater replaced 35mm last year. I'm not sure if that was a permanent change or something just for last year.

The changeover of 35mm to HD is a permanent change. As time has gone on, it has become more difficult to get relevant and new 35mm prints (not to mention the permissions for them). Mostly this is because of the shift in the industry towards digital formats leading to a lack of available and usable 35mm prints here in the US.

Just one more note on this, and then I'll leave it alone to get back to topic. What projectors are used in the HD rooms, and what format are the HD films in? I thought I read somewhere Digibeta, but that wouldn't make sense, since Digibeta is a storage method, from the early 90s, not a format, and it only stores in Standard definition, not High at all. So, that's obviously not the case. Just curious, as you guys know, HD isn't an exclusive term to one item, and no matter the source, if the projector isn't great, then neither will the film on screen. It looked great last year, though. No complaints there, at all. Still a shame though, about losing 35mm. I think it has better quality than the HD variations. But, that's the past.

I don't know the exact make/model of the projectors we get for this room, but I do know that we specifically arrange for ones that are capable of displaying HD quality material. Also we arrange for several media players for that room, so that we can accommodate a variety of formats.

I second a Baseball in Japan panel. The problem is that I don't know if there is someone that could put the panel on. I know some stuff about Japanese Baseball and the NPB, but probably not enough to put on the panel by myself.

Tokyo Zombie, old school classics should be show for sure.

For the vid rooms, it'd be best to make sure the programming is stuff that you normally can't see. Anime is easily seen every day, so why not more of an emphasis on live action material? Say..Gore Police and Machine Girl? Or I'm sure there are plenty of other films out there..maybe even some series, like maybe Trainman? Anyhow, that might help out into enticing more into coming to the screenings.~ Dred Lily ^w^V

I'm seconding Machine Girl. That movie is just.... ridiculous.

We showed Machine Girl last year. :) I remember, because I was on the other side of the wall from the speakers. It is a loud movie. n___n
