Oh my goddess.  Why?  Just why is it my favorite summer festa makes like Fievel & goes west for the winter?!  Thinking about it though I do hope ya can make this a big success yes.  Sorry, still stunned that there's now a west coast Otakon to go with the one here yes.  Just a couple questions, Why Vegas & not Calif. (though I have a good suspicion why) nor Oregon?  Also, what kind of congoing experience will you folk try to offer down there?  Is it going to be different than it is in Charm City yes?

So Otakon East now has an Otakon West?  I suppose our annual membership will get us into that one as well, right?  (yeah, RIGHT!) We get an $11 discount off the $40 entry fee.  Sadly I won't be able to attend as Vegas is just a bit outside my budget.  Besides, I've already been there (a couple of decades ago).  I got to see Sigfried and Roy before Roy got his face munched-on.

I do appreciate the choice in dates though. My initial thought was that school would prohibit a lot of people from being able to attend, but college kids will still be on break.

I do question though, the proximity to New Years. It'd be hard for me to take off work after already having off some days around the holidays. And for us retail people, it's return season :/

That's awesome that you're following up Otakon's 20th year by having a second [separate] Otakon.  Pretty much what the San Diego Comic-con did with many of the other Comic-cons.  [Of course, THAT con has been around for a looooong time.]

I'm afraid that I won't be attending the Vegas Otakon since I live much closer to the Baltimore one.  But I wish you guys the best of luck in making the new con as great as the old one.  Especially since you're more likely to attract other con-goers who won't be able to go to Baltimore.  ^_^

To book the room for Ota West did you have to put money up front. The way I read the site it looked like you did.

I'm excited!  The price is great and I've never been to Vegas.  It'll be nice seeing Otakon in a smaller setting.

So the deposit goes towards your room payment when you get there and not an extra charge right?

It most definitely is not an extra charge.  It is the same policy most hotels have about holding the reservation with a one night deposit.  If for some reason you are unable to attend you can always cancel and get your money back, as long as you cancel 72 hrs before your check-in time.

Good deal, hotels are typically very cheap in Las Vegas and so is airfare.  However it kinda bothers me that this convention is so close to New Year's day.  Kinda makes it hard for people that want to visit their family for the holidays instead of going to a convention.

Because this falls on my vacation time when I'm usually on the west coast to see family in LA, I'll be sure to be there. And here's hoping work also sends me out to CES too... convenience! So looking forward to this one. As a total rewards member, this makes me very happy. To the buffet!

If you have a casino card, they will often give you tickets to a show for free (I saw Penn & Teller), but even KA was not *too* bad (and well worth the $100 it set me back).

I do visit casinos fairly often (most of Atlantic City is run by Caesars, and PH is part of that group) and milk those comps and discounts to the max whenever I can. To this day I've never paid for a room in Vegas, and rarely pay much for one in AC (where they're stingier with the freebies).

Hopefully, Otakorp will do a better job handling a con in the Las Vegas area than the mess that took place when a My Little Pony convention was held in the same city last weekend.

Me and casinos don't mix.  On that trip back in the late 80's I had allocated $200 as gambling funds, and set a hard rule that once the $200 disappeared, the gambling was done.  (Yeah, I know... big spender)  I did this knowing only Blackjack and Roulette had anything even CLOSE to even odds (only if you bet red or black) but the house still retained a slight edge.  30 minutes after betting only $5 bets I was done. mellow.png  Then I had to wait four hours for the show to start, after the show I drove back to L.A.  Casinos see me coming and say, "After today we can afford to open up a new resort!" dry.png

Not on $200, they won't.   :)

Terrible time of the year for me... But I'll wait and see what guests you bring in anyway. In my mind "smaller and more intimate" means "not as good of a guest lineup." But I'll be happy to be proven wrong. Still a terrible time of year though.

I think the "smaller, more intimate" comment was more of an acknowledgement that Otakon - Las Vegas isn't something that has reached critical mass yet - where people go because of word of mouth.  It will take a few years before it could reasonably be expected to approach the size of a 20-year institution.

Just musing... if the staff at Caesar's Palace is invited over (and they show) is there an ancient Rome anime out there they could be called cosplayers for? happy.png

If I could get to that one I was going to try to convice my friends from my OTHER hobbies to show up, Minka lives in West Vegas,  I wonder if I could get her to show up in a Prince of Tennis Cosplay. Kyla, Melonie and Jade live out there too. Hmmm That could be a dangerous group of cosplay, the nosebleeds would be epic.

Fad they all live nearby and work at  "establishments" around the city.

Drop me a line and Ill send pictures.

Ah "locals".  No need for pictures, I get the idea. If those "establishments" are in the same county as Las Vegas, then they're not being regulated by the state. Nosebleeds are the least of your worries.

Yeah. "Escorts", "Entertainers", "Dancers", they go by various names to get around the "P" word.  A rose by any other name...

This sounds good.

I used to go to several hotel cons but after a few years got tired of seeing the same problems every year. Late starts, poorly ran events, poor quality video and sound... I'm really hoping Otakon brings back the hotel con for me.

Any guesses on the number of attendees? (My guess, right now, if 5K).

They're probably not going to have a basic idea until registration opens.  They could get a HUGE influx because it will be held in the "off-season" for conventions.  People who usually are all Con'd-out in the Summer might be ready for something new in January. It will be interesting to see what happens.

We're keeping our "official" internal expectations to ourselves at the moment, but *PERSONALLY* I would expect us to draw between 1k and 3k pretty easily -- and will push for the brakes to be put on if we are going too fast. I don't want us to become a victim of our success.

Better a truly great small con, first year, than something that gets out of control before we've had a chance to get comfortable with the setup.

Wow, this sounds amazing.  Any idea when information for vendors will be available?  We normally don't go that far west, but it's freaking Vegas.  For that we might make an exception.

The Otakon Vegas staff is working on a similar "milestone" schedule to Otakon.  To that Dealers, AA, and Panel sign-ups will be coming in a few months.

Keep an eye out on the website for all the updates as they come out.  There are some exciting announcements coming for this new event

Will you look into a Southwest Airlines discount as you have for Otakon in Baltimore?

Most definitely so... we are already in talks with them but until recently they hadn't released their flight schedule that far out.  At the moment it ends on January 5th and we'd like to give some shoulder time for people coming in so they don't have to rush home..

We are still working to get a Discount w/ Southwest and other airlines.  Unfortunately it is not easy as Las Vegas is such a popular destination they offer so many discounts through the course of the year they are hesitant to offer one to a specific group.  We will keep trying though...

Seriously?  Vegas is popular in January?  58 degrees in the daytime and 39 degrees in the nighttime?  I guess it would be popular to the people from Maine. laugh.png Then again, with all these casinos opening up on the east coast, it seems to me that Vegas as a "go to" destination should be on the wane for people from the Northeast.

Any update on a Southwest Airlines discount? Now that I've regestered and got the hotel I will probably want to book the air fare right after Otakon.

Thanks!
