Anime now, versus then

Recommended Posts

I attended the 1996 AMV contest showing on the last Sunday of the convention (the original showing in 1996 too), and it had me wondering how things have changed.

The older anime used to feature broad, detailed, cityscapes but I don't recall seeing anything like that for quite a while. Same with mecha shows. Armitage the Third, Dominion Tank Police, Akira, Bubblegum Crisis, and more would have futuristic cities. There were a lot of mecha featured in the old days too, like K.O. Beast, Mobile Police Patlabor, GunBuster, Macross / Robotech, Iczer 1 . Did those genres kind of die off, or are the current digital tools too cumbersome to produce shows like that any more? I may not be familiar with the current generation of shows out there, though.
