Anime Convention Concept A Western One?

Yeah... I really can't see legit "Western-style" anime cons popping up in Japan... it seems too meta/too redundant since anime in Japan is basically a regular TV show, and celebrating a TV show seems silly IMO...

Anime Convention Concept A Western One?

That's a good question. Comiket serves the doujinshi creators, while AnimeJapan (nee TAF) is a trade show. JumpFesta is run by Shueisha. Anime conventions as we know them are more of a western concept--not just in the US, but events like Anime Friends and Japan Expo. That's perhaps a byproduct of how anime cons here were outgrowths of comic and sci-fi cons. For Japanese guests, it's something novel and, for musical acts, a feather in their cap.

Anime Convention Concept A Western One?

Hey guys, so someone I talk to says he might not do Otakon anymore past this year due to him having the opportunity of moving across the country to Washington State, and someone in that group chat we're in on FaceBook said for him to move to Japan to attend anime conventions there to spite us all... Is convention culture as strong in Japan as it is in other countries/continents like North America and Europe? To my knowledge anime is so intertwined into the general pop culture in Japan that having a convention for a general TV show genre for them would be overly exaggerated, don't you guys think? Also to my knowledge the only "convention" like things that happen are Comiket (Comic Market) twice a year, the Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair, as well as C3AFA Tokyo, which are convention-like events, but to me it doesn't seem to represent what we in the Western world depict as a true anime convention... This is all speculation on my part really since I've never been to Japan in general, but what are your guys' thoughts?

The 2019 Otakon Goer Roll-Call Thread

I was supposed to attend last year but couldn't make it since I loved to Japan that weekend. Since I'm still in Japan I won't be able to attend this year as well. But I figured I'd say hello and answer this for the sake of tradition: PREFERRED NAME: JoelHOMETOWN: Downingtown, Pa. Currently residing in Tokaimura, Ibaraki prefecture# OF OTAKONS ATTENDED: 7, the last one being 2017The BONUS ? for 2019: The most unique cosplay I've worn was a tentacle monster. I wore it at Katsucon once and at Otakon a couple times. The awesomest I've seen was a transforming Optimus Prime at Zenkaikon in 2014.

    Scooters in DC?

I drive nights for Uber in the DC metro area and can confirm that there are a LOT of rentable electric scooters in DC that are in use at all hours of the night. Metro is an alternative option up until midnight or so - when Metro service stops for the night. Uber/Lyft, etc. are other options, but if you're looking for one in the midnight to 3:30 am time frame you will probably be in a "surge pricing" area and the rates will be higher than you are normally used to. The majority of the NW DC night scene (especially Adams Morgan) on weekends becomes surge pricing as closing time approaches. For DC, closing time is 3:00 am for alcohol establishments. The following are some of the recent article headlines in the Washington Post (sorted newest to oldest) regarding scooter usage in DC: DC suspends Skip scooter service after second fire within a month. (June 19, 2019) More Washingtonians say drivers are bad than say the same of cyclists, walkers, scooter riders, (June 10, 2019) Nearly 1 in 6 D.C. residents use e-scooters, poll finds (June 7, 2019) Boom in electric scooters leads to more injuries, fatalities (June 6, 2019) Skip suspends e-scooter service while it reviews fire (May 31, 2019) An electric scooter caught fire in downtown D.C.
