Otakon 2019: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

I'll preface this with a big fat disclaimer: not my job, not my call to make. That said: The issue is likely access control. The initial rush of people to the dealer hall is probably the single biggest logistical line management issue in the whole convention. The autograph area is in the dealer hall. Anything that puts people in that space before it's open properly and the pent-up line of people is processed is ripe for massive abuse and confusion. You'd have folks standing in the autograph line only to break out and hit the dealer hall, and thus skip the huge long Friday morning line there. It's much the same reason why certain escalators are one-way during key traffic points. OR you'd have to assign more staff to make sure nobody popped out from Autographs to go to the other areas. But I agree, it would be ideal if we had a way to make autographs its own space more easily. But as the guy who ran guests for many years when we were in Baltimore and stuck with a terribly limited space and virtually no lining area at all, this is a big big improvement.
  7. I need assistance getting into contact with some people I met at Otakon 2018. I found that I had fairly interesting conversations with them. You could say we hit it off. I’ve felt very regretful about not have kept in contact with them especially one of them in particular. I am requesting assistance on possibly being able to get into contact with them; all I have is a picture I took of them in their Lucina and Robin cosplays from Fire Emblem. Please be sure to inform me if I should be posting to another board or site. I would really appreciate the assistance.

Good points, all. But what about my recommendation of a separate entrance line for autograph seekers so we could get to the autograph area without having to deal with the massive mob entering the dealers' room?

Otakon 2019: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

This stopped happening in the past couple years, but in the years prior to that, there would be a page on the website with information on Premieres and Special Screenings. It would be really nice if that would come back. I asked on social media this year if it would be back and got a "maybe" gif response, but nothing happened. Can we please get the Premieres and Special Screenings page back on the website to make these events more visible?

Regarding the Women in Anime panel

As you said, wires got crossed. Sometimes it isn't clear until just a hair too late that that's happened. With 200+ events on the schedule, it's almost inevitable. Privately, I'm going to suggest that Ellyn use a less generic name for her panel to avoid similar mishaps, much like Richard does with his outtakes panel.

Otakon 2019: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Hmm. May want to tweak your settings and put Otakon in the "always show" camp. I was seeing social media posts from Otakon nearly every day, and the info was on the website, IIRC. A few of the things were confirmed quite late in the day, though. I think the Promare announcement got something like 30k views just on FB. Unlike the BCC some years, the water in WWDCC is potable, and I kept refilling my bottle all day. It's something I do at every con -- I refill whenever I see water. I didn't have much trouble finding a place to do that, but I know we buy less bottled water than we used to because the water fountains by all the bathrooms work just fine. (As do the bathrooms, and there are more of those, too...) I'd have to check but I think we reduced the number of water stations based on usage patterns; I know we *talked* about that at one point, but I'm not sure we did it.

Inoue-san is one of the busier actresses, and while she enjoys our show, she had to be back at work on Monday to record [REDACTED]. That's been the case with many of our high profile seiyu, and a reason why east coast cons have more challenges with seiyu in general -- that extra 5-6 hours of travel time makes a big difference. At any rate, it's not a case of not being able to afford her, it's working around her schedule, which unfortunately typically means compressing ours.
  14. Thank you all for making Otakon 25 great. Here's a small gift for everyone to enjoy and share. If you find yourselves in this video, please leave a comment and I'll reply with a shout-out(& thank you): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RFC0fs83mo
  15. Forgot to say that the vids I saw on youtube, didn't show Japanese casinos. Sorry about that.
  16. Actually, I wasn't able to attend. There's some youtube vids on it though.

    Gameshow

And I definitely was afraid of that. When I realized on Thursday I wasn't going to be able to use the stage, I was told by the tech we could hook up the gopro for some action shots, but when I showed up it didn't work. Definitely an expectation vs reality moment for me.

Was it just me, or was there a serious lack of giveaway swag from the industry booths this year?

Name of Hotel: Embassy Suites Was it part of the official block? Yes Price: $217 / night Type of room: King Suite The Good: The suites are spacious, with living area which includes a table and chairs, sleeper sofa, coffee table, arm chair, and a large TV. The room included refrigerator and microwave, and had a second sink on the counter outside of the bathroom, which made getting ready in the morning a bit quicker. The bedroom had its own large TV. Hot breakfast was included with a made to order omelette line and a line for buffet-style breakfast. Breakfast included sausage and bacon, fried potatoes, eggs, and a different starch each day (pancakes, waffles, french toast) with warm syrup. Fresh fruit, pastries, yogurt, cereals, and beverages round out the options. I didn't take advantage of this, but they also had an evening reception each day with complimentary alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages and light snacks included. The location is great. It is a short walk from the convention center (0.4 miles) and located with convenient access to a nearby CVS, parking garages, and food options. Staff was friendly and efficient. The hotel's bag storage on Sunday was quick and easy to drop off and pick up. The Bad: Nothing really bad so these will be minor nitpicks. The hallways are open on one side and overlook the lobby, so noise may travel up into the halls at times. The pool was crowded on Friday night and a band-aid was spotted on the ground of the pool area. Manage your expectations if sleeping on the sleeper sofa. It is somewhere to sleep, but not nearly as comfortable as an actual bed. The room had a paper bag marked as a bag for recycling, but when housekeeping took the bag on Friday, a new one was not left for us. Final thoughts: An excellent place to stay. Highly recommend.

    Otakon Panel Feedback 2019

That was your first panel? I'm really impressed! I really enjoyed your explanation of how the themes of crime and justice in Persona related to the criminal justice system in Japan as a whole; I learned a lot. I hope you guys come back!

I'll bite! Name of Hotel: Renaissance Was it part of the official block? Yes Price: $700-ish for a Thurs-Sun stay Type of room: Double bed The Good: Close to the convention, super polite staff. We got comped wi-fi for being part of the convention block, and there were apparently themed special drinks (and maybe food) at the hotel bar, although we never got around to checking out if that was true. We were able to check in early with no difficulty, and checking out wasn't too bad of a wait (we forgot that you can check out via their app, so that's on us). Housekeepers were great. The Bad: I can only think of weird little things that I disliked, like the layout of the lobby (was a little hard to navigate, and the elevators are kind of hidden). Nothing really impacted the quality of my stay. Final thoughts: We're absolutely staying here again; it was fantastic!

Was there something wrong with the forums?

According to the hosting provider there has been an issue with the server that our forums are on. I've been through the cycle of it doesn't work - support ticket - it works - time passes - it doesn't work many times now. I'm currently reviewing alternate hosting providers. As it's somewhat ridiculous that the same issue it happened more than twice. When I do switch the BBS over I'll post an announcement in the BBS announcement section so that everyone can be ready for a day or two of service disruption as the DNS moves to a new address.

    Otakon Panel Feedback 2019

Hi! I was one of the panelists for this one. Glad you mostly enjoyed it - we were also super annoyed by the audience member(s) interjecting during the panel, but didn't really know how to deal with it at the time. This was actually our first panel ever so if we run it again we should hopefully be better at stopping that kind of thing.

    Otakon Panel Feedback 2019

I did not get to see the New Anime for Old Fans panel. I showed up 20 minutes before the panel and kept waiting for the previous panel to let out. Apparently, the people were in the room for that panel, and there was no space for anyone. A bunch of us were waiting outside to get in, and I gave up eventually. Hold it in a much bigger room next time.

Hi everyone! Like the subject says. I was trying to get to the forums these past few days only to get a message something like "It has reached capacity, try again later" when I tried to access it.

Hi everyone! While we're waiting for Otakon to officially open their Hotel room blocks for 2020, anybody has anything to say about the hotels and their rooms that they stayed for this year? I'm kind of surprised that no one has made a poll about this yet. It could be in this format: Name of Hotel: Was it part of the official block? Price: Type of room: The Good: The Bad: Final thoughts: I like to hear (and I'm sure Otakon as well), what was everyone's overall experiences in this.
