Another Chance for an Otakon Video Game

Yeah, I admit that I could have choose those words "under the rug" a bit better, more like "pretend it didn't exist". Since all we heard from Otakon years ago was that it was handed to the lawyers, the licensed was pulled and that was it. I was hoping for some official statement on something other than what we got. When I heard the quote "handed to the lawyers (I believe this came from an old feedback panel)" I was hoping that we get at least a statement about what happened. I just felt like everything was quiet and that was it. As I said, if another game was announced, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't back it just because of how bad a taste the old one left in my mouth.
  6. So who would guys want to see next year at Otakon 2020? 7. Sorry this is last minute, but there's a Small Press Expo, which emphasizes (and sells) Independent comcs and graphic novels, this Sat and Sun (Sept 14-15, 2019), in North Bethesda, Maryland. It'll be at the Marriott, across from the White Flint metro (on the Red Line). When you get to White Flint metro, there's one exit. You'll see the Marriott across the street (after exiting). You'll also see across the street: McDonalds and 7-Eleven (very handy). Url: smallpressexpo.com Doesn't cost much to attend. Sat is 15.00. Sun is 10.00. Whole weekend is 20.00. Times are: Sat: 11am -- 7pm. Sun: 12pm -- 6pm. Some metro stations close to White Flint will be closed this weekend. The Small Press Expo's homepage has a link to wmata.com's track work. Usually, metro has free bus service which stops at all the closed stations. P.S. People don't usually cosplay at this expo. There's usually around 2 or 3 cosplayers that I see (and of course I don't see everyone).

I feel ya. But I don't think any of that money is coming back. That's the risk of kickstarter and other crowdfunding. You don't know if the projects will come to pass, and you may not see your investment pay off. That's simply how it works. The money was spent, and the project failed to produce. We said what we could legally at the time and the statements are on record. There was no sweeping under the rug. Let me clarify something here to the best of my understanding, and with the disclaimer that I'm NOT making a statement on behalf of the corporation here -- this is my personal recollection and most of it's been public for a while. Otakorp, the organization, provided some seed money (I don't recall the exact amount, but it was thousands of dollars) and licensed our mascot characters and some concepts to the team making the game. We didn't own the process or have access to the kickstarter process other than as a participant -- that was all the studio making the game. And the folks behind that had a long association with the community and nobody had a reason to doubt their intentions. You may notice that my avatar here is "Evil Doctor V" from the concept art. Fred "Piro" from Megatokyo did some of the concept art and was one of many creative types (including voice actors) who committed to or helped build the prototype. (My inclusion as a boss was going to be a surprise until our lawyer pointed out that they had to get me to sign off on using my likeness, so the first I heard of it was when I was asked to approve and sign off on the art.) Since other folks paid to be included, once the KS launched, I forked over the appropriate donation for that tier (I want to say $400 or $600), since it only seemed fair. At least I got this out of it, which is a lot more than most folks got. Disclaimer: I have known Fred for like 15-20 years and I certainly could have paid a lot less to be captured in his style. Further disclaimer: Most folks in the industry understand that projects don't always pan out and I think they've written it off long ago. For Otakorp a lot of the value came from the announcement buzz -- but the negative impact of its failure was no picnic. But for the staff who chipped in, that's money lost just like it is for any members who supported it. And I don't speak for everyone on this, but I suspect that we're a little hesitant to get involved in another game project. Still, we're up on MOST conventions in terms of video game credibility: Otacon, of MGS fame, is named after our event and many MGS materials credit us with allowing them to use the name -- and we always credit Dr Hal Emerich as our scientific adviser in our program book.

Thank you. It's something I may consider this coming Otakon (assuming it returns.) I have gaggle of suits (about a dozen or so) but have yet to plunk down the yen for a bespoke tux.\ My next challenge would be to teach Dr. Mrs. how to dance. I'll start by getting her to watch "Welcome to the Ballroom" and work up from there. ~_^

All indications are the money is gone. https://www.otakujournalist.com/future-hazy-for-crisis-heart-brawlers-clash-at-otakon/ I should disclose I am quoted in this story.

As someone who lost $200 from the game back when it was done (and I only paid that much money because Otakon was supporting it). I would first like to have my money back before any other project was announced as this would be a kick in the teeth for me. Or at least have the people who backed the game have our original ideas and tiers done. Having another game would feel as if Otakon is trying to sweep it under the rug, which they seem to have done already.

Even if it's a different team, I think those who backed the other project may still be bitter from getting tooken.

  17. Hi everyone. After hearing about the success of a recent side-scrolling beat-em-up game by WayForward called "River City Girls", I was thinking that maybe we should ask WayForward if they could help revive the idea for an official Otakon game. I understand that the previous attempt for an official Otakon game didn't go so well. But I feel that with WayForward's reputation, as well as the talent that it has on its side, we could have our dream of an Otakon game turned into a reality this time. The game could feature elements from the con's history past and present. From its early years to its Baltimore era to its current D.C. era. I'll understand if this project won't be for another few years. But I thought I should bring it up while its still relevant. Thank you for listening.

As someone who helped out with the formal ball, this isn't really accurate. It was a formal event, which means a person couldn't show up in shorts & a t-shirt. Clothing such as tux's & ball gowns were highly encouraged but as long as you come in nice attire you'd be let in (ex: slacks and a button up shirt would be fine).

He’s been to otakon a lot, and is a friend. But he rarely performs these days because he essentially runs lantis and typically accompanies JAM project... (not as keyboardist, though). the Lazy reunion may have changed his mind.

  24. We hope you enjoyed everything we had to present at this year's Otakon. Now that you've had some time to reflect, we'd love to get your feedback -- let us know how we did! The format of the survey is much like last year's and should only take about 10 minutes to complete. Didn't attend? Let us know why. Your feedback helps us plan for next year! For context: Grandrodeo and Garnidella have both been attempted before. I feel like we may have come close with M-flo a while ago, but I know we had Taku this past year. Scheduling is always a challenge, especially for folks who work the lucrative summer festivals in Japan.
  26. NYCC sounds AWESOME!!! It's probably so hard for you to wait 'til Oct! Though, I won't be able to attend. The Anime Fest doesn't sound too promising, but if they have people buying badges for each individual event -- maybe they have better things scheduled this year? I don't know. Sounds like a coin toss as to whether the Anime Fest will be good or not. Hey, at least Anime NYC will be in Nov! Please tell us about your adventures at NYCC (and Anime Fest, if you attend)!
  27. Not sure if anyone is interested, but this Saturday (Aug 31, 2019) the National Book Festival will be held at the WEWCC, from 8:30am - 8pm. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will be there, along with tons of authors. (Can't remember exactly, but I think there were some manga artists there in the past?) Admission is free (yay!). You all probably have plans already for the holiday weekend (in the USA), but thought I'd post this anyway. Website: https://www.loc.gov/events/2019-national-book-festival Edited to add: Just found out they'll be live streaming Justice Ginsburg's talk and many others. Live streaming info at: https://blogs.loc.gov/national-book-festival/
  28. Hi All! I just got my NYCC badge in the mail last night, so I'm going to assume that others are beginning to get their's as well. Also, it's the return of their offshoot "Anime Fest @ NYCC X Anime Expo". I think that part is going to be worst than last year. Last year, you had to buy a separate badge to attend that part and travel via shuttle bus or walk to it's location (was about a little more than a half a mile away from the Javis). This year, it's a lot closer, but it seems like you have to buy a badge for each individual event for Anime Fest @ NYCC x Anime Expo ! Who's bright idea this was? Last year it was almost a disaster. This year it might probably crash and burn! Anyway, it's a good thing that I do enjoy everything else that NYCC has to offer, but I would hold off my anime appetite for Anime NYC that will go on the following month.

Yeah, what I was told in the thread for this year was that they've tried to get Monkey Majik in the past, but the scheduling hasn't worked. Sidebar: It's super weird when an Avex act performs stateside now because literally none of their newer CDs are available even in dealer's rooms now due to the baffling export ban. I wanted to get something signed by Verbal and Taku Takuhashi at ACen, but found nothing physical in the dealers room for them to sign. And then there's the absurd way autograph tickets were handled at ACen, so even if I found something... but that's another story.
